Proof of TV dumming down?
Tonight's edition of University Challenge had Paxman telling the contestants that a photo of Arundel castle was in fact Warwick castle and that the photo of Warwick castle was er..Arundel castle and not one of Oxford and Cambridge's finest could even guess that someone who would 'leave no turn unstoned' was a drama critic
. On Mastermind tonight the word 'lyrics' was used in a question instead of the word 'lyric' (a huge crime imo)and the chap who won had The Royale Family' as his specialist subject! Ok its not proof of anything BUT.....
Is there actually anything worth watch on TV these days?
I've just seen the first two series of ReGenesis which is incredibly interesting, well written and well filmed - its Canadian and at least as good as anything to come out of the US or UK.
Am I missing anything on the box at the mo that is actually worth watching?

Apparently there's been a doco that said positive things about Dame Thatcher.
Did you miss that?

Dumbing down is the name of the game. Let us be honest, you have dumbed this forum down considerabley.
The only upside is that I now spend hell of a lot less time here than I did before you came along.

'Dumming down'. No idea if that was intentional or not, but it's the funniest thing I've read today

There never was a golden age of TV. There was (proportionally) as much dross on TV in the 60s and 70s as there is today.

Probably very true Droo, but what is it with these documentaries where the narrator repeats everything 4 or 5 times? I find it very tedious. Is it a way of stretching out thin material or do they think we need to be told more than once cos we is fick?

The title makes me wonder if the audience are dumbing down...

Made with the US in mind? They tend to at least "double" explain every thing,or as in the CSI programmes use an abbreviation and then the colleague says the full thing.Even more annoying is the recap after every ad break as if we will have forgotten everything in the 3 minutes of the adverts.

Nice to see that even very bright people can't spell. I is fick, so have 'n excuse! Just kidding!
In fact I am ahead of the game here. I parted with Television in early 2003, and in one of the phone calls to Licence people who were really being very unpleasant and kept virtually suggesting I was a liar, I said to the girl, that there is nothing intelligent worth watching any more. I said that I was sure she realised this and had no TV. She replied that she did to which I added that I was sorry, and that I would have to assess her intelligence as less than I had previously thought.
She informed that the call was recorded! I said that this was a good thing, and that the next thing they would here would be from my MP. Three weeks later I had a deeply apologetic letter from someone quite senior. I have never heard from them since! I cannot understand why anyone would watch TV if they are not happy with its content. Just part with it and get on with something more interesting.

They obviously haven't dumbed it down enough for you acad tsunami. If you're going to convict all other people of poor spelling crimes, perhaps you should learn yourself.
It's The Royle Family.

Thatcher started the Enterprise Allowance Scheme which allowed me to start my own business. I've been independent now for 15 years.
Now the government taxes the lower paid people.

Must have been just like listening to that album called the Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan on Stiff Records, where both sides were silent.
I can think of one positive thing about Thatcher - she's gone.
However, things did not get better - I know God gave us life, but also gave us John Major and he also gave us Tony Blair and he also gave us Gordon Brown ......
Has TV dumbed down - simple answer is yes. ITV used to make good programmes: The Prisoner, Danger Man, The Saint, Stingray, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet and show great children's programmes like Quick Draw McGraw (anybody here remember El Kabong). It even made decent comedy shows like Only When I Laugh, Bless This House and Rising Damp and Anglia TV produced Survival, Tales Of The Unexpected and Sale Of The Century - whoops, didn't mean to say that last one.
The BBC do still produce some good stuff - Atom was worth watching - but there's no cricket on the Beeb anymore which is a disgrace.

Re the favourable documentary and Maggie T.
The program was by Andrew Marr who was/is a left leaning journo of some repute and so a favourable comment by him of Maggie and what she did for the country is of some significance.
TV is only dumbing down if you let it - a controlled use of Sky+ and the off switch ensures that we have a satisfactory range of programmes to watch.
However it is a sad comment on the TV audience that they have to have a lot of programs presented in the jeopardy format - ie will the the house get built in time before the rains, will the featured person achieve the required skill, will country be pacified etc

Chops,
The use of the word 'dumming' was tongue in cheek - I thought that much was obvious - My misspelling of 'Royle' was a genuine mistake.
So is there anything worth watching on the box at the mo? I've also watched the first two series of 'Dexter' recently in which a perfectly nice serial killer who works for the police goes about killing off other serial killers. Its strong on black humour which I quite like but I'm not really sure if I approve of the concept as it does appeal to a certain lynch mob and vigilante type mentality but it is well written.

Yes, Howard. The recap thing drives me nuts. If you took away the repetition and recaps from a 1 hour documentary what are we left with? A half hour documentary!

I suspect that the BBC will get you to chair the Brains Trust so they, as well as us, will be compelled to witness a dumbo posing as a self opinionated intellectual.
Carry on boring us all.

Ahh another typo - I admit to typing too fast with fingers recovering from dislocations - what is your excuse Mick? If I took all this seriously I would check my posts but alas I can't be bothered.
BTW - don't forget to post on my heroes thread
'Ghengis Khan'
'Attila the Hun'
'Margaret Thatcher'
'Peter Rachman' &
'Jack the Ripper'
ponder 'self opinionated'

Now that I am in the relentless grip of GOMism, I rarely find anything I want to watch on TV. Sometimes the rump of sport left available to those of us who don't subscribe to Sky is worth a look in, although gruesomely padded out with the views of previous practitioners. In depth current affairs programs are few and far between, with the BBC seemingly still traumatised by the palpably disgraceful Hutton whitewash and ITN so lightweight I fear a strong breeze will blow it off screen forever.
Thank heavens for recorded music, the printed word and the company of interesting people.
