What’s the clock, Mr. 52?

Since I’ve upgraded to a Scap, now I’ll be able to drive any of the (old-styled) big preamps when I find one cheap, to replace my 72. And here I have a query.
Supposed you have CD as the only source, volume pots of the modest preamps work usually at 9 o’clock position. Pots like that would work better at 12 but CD gives too high a signal for them. (Additional card in a 32.5 or 72 brings the signal to the level desired but do ruine the sound.)
Do have the big preamps like 82 or 52 only the ususal CD input associated with the ususal high output level, or do they have other options? Thanks for any opinion.
