Apple Remote - The good gets better!

Posted by: Naijeru on 26 June 2009

Just a heads up if you haven't heard already, there's an update to the Apple remote for iPhone that now provides full control over all Apple TV functions, not just media, effectively replacing the stupid white remote. Rejoice!

You need to update the AppleTV firmware and be running OS3 on your iPhone/iTouch too.

The five minute attempt and a certain failed result is a familiar scenario to me!

amateur hour. Dont see how anyone could use that.

This is what happens when you give anything 5 minutes.

This is what I see (on my mini):

This is what I see on my appletv:

XBMC is fully and easily skinable to make it look how you want. The skin you opened up to is largly for set up only.

XBMC scrapes IMDB for all details on your movies and TV shows and downloads all sorts of pictures and info on them. Importantly XBMC supports just about every file format for playback of music and video, everything. All on my Appletv, so no pissing around with converting files and being stuck into Apples way. The apple interface looks like ametur hour compared to XBMC with a skin on.

Take a few minutes, learn the software and realise just how crap and restrictive apples version is*

XBMC is primarily for tinkering. I wouldn't suggest it for a main system.

Then you have no idea what so ever. I have over 400 movies all stored on a Drobo, flawless playback through XBMC including 720 and 1080i with DTS 5.1 surround sound.

It makes an awesome back bone for a home media centre.

Garyi,

It is simply too slow for me. All it does ios make a glossy interface for a standard windows finder. And I only require music replay, not a swiss army knife.

Of course, if all you want is music there is no value in XBMC.

I was thinking whole world approach to media, which ATV claims to be.

To be fair the apple remote software on ipod is so damn good I continue to use itunes behind XBMC on my mini.

Bingo! There's no denying XBMC is pretty cool, but it's overkill for my needs and the amount of futzing required kinda defeats the purpose for me regarding apple tv. If I wanted to do that kind of stuff I'd just get a mini.

Now if they'd just enable ratings from the remote it would be perfect.

If you've updated your AppleTV f/w you need to update your Airfoil to 2.7.1 (Windows) too.
