NACA 5 Burn In

Posted by: Arnaud on 21 October 2003

Could anyone describe as precisely as possible what's the sound of a brand new pair of NACA 5 (decent? horrible? with no trebles?, no bass? or almost fine, etc.), and how it improoves over time, and when it can bee considered as burned in?

Thanks for your inputs

if the nacA5 is soldered properly -- it should open up within 24 hours in my experience. it certainly wont sound "horrible" but the music will get easier on the ear. if the naim plugs are soldered "too tight" then treble will sound dirty and no amount of run-in will sort this out.

What's that all about then? The speaker pins/plugs have a slot in them which I would say fairly limits the way in which the cable can be soldered. Would you care to elaborate on "too tight"

My brand new NACA-5 was good from the start. It was slightly shrill, but it was better than the NACA-4 that it replaced, and it got noticeably better over the course of an hour or two. Complete burn-in may have taken longer, but I was happy from the start and thrilled after an hour.

I bought my new NACA 5 yesterday: first impressions: lots of dynamics and weight in the music, but i've effectively got that impression of "dirty treble" or "shy treble" (i e: the "Charleston" on drums in rock music is very polite, and it doesn't sound as clean and bright as it should), allthough i've used Naim plugs at the amp end...
I hope things will get better over the week-end.
Thanks for your inputs on that matter.

I've posted on this before.

6 months for it to really sound at its best. My experience, which differs from Ken C's
(1 day!?).

They sound hard, bass-shy with a recessed midrange when new, so expect it to really sing after the burn-in period. When run-in, Naca 5s at the end of a full blown Naim system sound beautifully balanced from top to bottom, coherent, with enough PRT to make you dance to kingdom come and back. Big Grin If they don't sound anywhere near this, look at your set-up carefully and they should and will.

I have read much muck thrown at the Naca5 performance, which couldn't be further from the truth. Bang for the buck, in a full Naim system, you won't be complaining.

Please get them off the floor and unwind them so that they stretch out fully (brings the bass back, not joking here...). They shouldn't touch the power cords either.

Hope this clarifies and helps.

Good listening; the music's groovin' frightfully more.

Rgds

I think we need a lesson on "cable dressing". Anyone?

Hello, Re Cable Dressing

I took the trouble to raise the interconnect feeding my 250, what a difference, the sound is much better. But a word of warning, I didn't expect such a flacky move to make any difference, and it took several days for the sound to get better.

I used felt covered pads designed to be used under furniture legs.

Do give it a try...even my wife noticed the difference !
