Saw Shane Meadow's new flick last night. A powerful piece of cinema. Twelve year old Sean's father has been killed fighting in the Falklands war. He is being bullied at school and is taken under the wing of a gang of local skinheads who become his surrogate family.
The opening of the film is a stunning montage of the ravages of Thatcherism and how, when communities are torn apart, dissaffected youth can be drawn to another, darker, more dangerous sense of identity.
The film also illustrates how the original skinhead movement, which was largely inclusive and a celebration of white, working class kids adopting West Indian music and fashion, came to be exploited by the far-right.
A mature film from the excellent Meadows and a cracking soundtrack 'n all.
