Saving Private Ryan on Blu Ray

Posted by: TomK on 18 May 2010

Sorry if this is old news but Paramount have issued a recall on this because of audio sync problems from chapter 15 on. Check here for further details.

I've only watched the first half hour or so and it looked superb so haven't actually seen the fault with my own eyes. It's all over the forums though.

I've checked the people I buy most from and there's not a mention of it anywhere.

I got the recall, but having watched it all the way through I can't say I noticed anything wrong.

You watched Saving Private Ryan all the way through and didn't see anything wrong?

Now, now. Play nice!

I checked out some of the later scenes and to be honest it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Could it vary with player?

It's a stunning film IMO gary. What part of it didn't you like?

Oh sorry I get it now. Gary was using a perfectly innocent public information post to demonstrate his über coolness whereas I thought he was actually confirming the varying reports of the severity of the problem.

Gary, next time you feel like being smart or funny please give us a nod so I know whether to laugh. Sometimes it's nice just to be able to pass on information without having to filter out smart arse crap.

Chill out Tom were you the producer or something?*

I hate tom Hanks.
I dislike American film history.

*That was a joke.

Point taken but as a long term professional techie my primary use of forums is for the fast convenient exchange of information. Irrelevant comments are generally unwanted and unnecessary and I made the mistake of thinking that even on a board like this it might be possible to pass on some straightforward info without useless nonsense being introduced.
That's all.

Bottom line is, there was an error in the authoring of the SPR blu ray and I fail to see how your opinion of Tom Hanks is of any relevance.

Only joking (well partly). I'm not such a po faced git but sometimes it would be nice just to be able to pass on some info without added unnecessary complications.

My dad was on the beach and said it was the most realistic of any war film of what combat is like, but once it goes beyond the beach it is just Hollywood. I wish Spielberg would do another uplifting film and Hanks some lighter work also.

Dad has never paid attention to movies except when 60s buxom Italian actresses were in them. He seemed to slow down passing thru the family room when Sophia and Gina were on screen.

So, you think it's not accurate? It was only through watching "U571" that I learned the americans, not the british, captured the first Enigma machine.

Mudwolf,

Does your dad have an opinion regarding Band of Brothers, which is supposed to be a "better" Saving Private Ryan?

Hat off, regardless of him being sat on, or landing on the beach.

BoB is very well done, btw.

he wasn't thrilled with it. He doesn't watch movies for entertainment. It was the shaking of the camera and the chaos that made you feel like you were there that impressed him. No other film really does that. I liked Band of Brothers,

I watch a lot of documentaries. The latest one to impress me is The Rape of Europa, all about how the Nazis focused on taking all the major artworks first then bombing the buildings to rob people of their culture. Amazing what they got away with. I love history now, reading about it in Jr High was deadly boring. I think it's the visuals and narration that focuses you on a specific area or time.

Mudwolf,

If you're after quality narration and visuals, I'd strongly recommend the documentary "Apocalypse". It is based on recently "unearthed" and restored material and despite being french, it sounds very objective and neutral. To me, it actually sounds like the most informative and unbiased documentary about WW2 I've seen so far. It's 6 hours long and has an english audio track.

sounds good I'll hunt it up. I do know there are other sides and opinions on all of the war.

I just saw a doc on the London blitz and it was amazing hourly account of saving St Paul as a symbol was very smart of Churchill. And some real footage, I can't understand how we could have held back another year and a half.
