Which vinyl al*** do you use to show off with

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 11 September 2009

When you have a guest who knows nothing of the world of hi-fi, which LP do you use to show off your system and challenge their belief that CDs are better than vinyl?

I'm currently using Ricky Lee Jones "It's Like This" on a 2x45 rpm format. (If there is only time for one example).

After that, I've got some 45 rpm Blue Note re-issues that are rather nice.

Thanks Mike for your comment.

My ability to ignore the shortcomings of old recordings is limited, maybe it will get better in the future. Nevertheless I am able to listen to vinyl era recordings, that is obviously the first step Winker .

Best wishes

Oooh the Beat Im gonna put that on right NOW.

Good suggestions. I always blow people away with my MFSL Abbey Road vinyl. Im not sure why but it just sounds so damn good on my system.

Just Can't Stop It - an early digitally recorded LP?

Got to go with 'Transformer' Lou Reed and in particular, Walk on the Wild Side. The part where the female backing vocals come in towards the end and increase in volume is tangible on vinyl...not quite so on the cd pressing i have.

Seems the experts declare that classical music was recorded and pressed to vinyl unnaturally. Ah well...funny but the same thing didn't happen to a lot of Jazz recorded in the late '50s thru to the early '70s...which is excellent news for me since I have some remarkable jazz LP's to use as demonstraters.

Ben Webster - Soulville
Oscar Peterson - Exclusively for my friends volumes 1 to VI
Count Basie - Chairman of the Board

and so on...

Mind you in my innocence I am pretty impressed with some of my classical vinyl. For example:

Ito Ema - Goldberg Variations - MA recordings
Dimtry Sitkovetsky - Bach Violin Sonatas and Partitas - Orfeo records
Giuliano Carmignola & Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca - Vivaldi Four Seasons - Cisco records
Antal Doriti & LSO - Stavinsky Etudes, Tango, Fireworks, Song of the Nightingale - Mercury
Minnesota Orch - Ravel works such as Rapsody Espagnol - Analogue Productions records

I thought I was alone in this Ryan, yes it's amazing on vinyl and uninspiring on cd at the point you describe.

Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. Jaco Pastourious's fretless bass impresses everyone.

A friend asked me to put that on recently, but on listening I didn't feel that the recording was up to the old Blue Note standards. A good record none the less.
I am becoming seriously addicted to LP re-releases at 45rpm, my SME TT just loves them, but thankfuly they are still few and far between.

I've not had many people impressed, they often say "what am I to listen for?" I just say it sounds right and I can listen for hours. It's not fireworks. But I tend toward easy things like P Simon, Joni, Beatles.

Only one friend comes over regularly for a listen session, we used to do Martinis but now he doesn't drink. I've been going thru withdrawal since redoing my floors in the apartment, Haven't heard my stuff for almost 4 weeks now. Hopefully it'll be this weekend set up. Music big time and all vinyl.

Dear Doc,

Someone has to fill the bill as the Forum Village Idiot, don't they?

That or it would be a dull life if we all said what was expected rather then things we actually think!

And I think:-

They're coming to take me away! Hoho!
They're coming to take me away!
