Expressimo vs OL counterweight

Posted by: John on 13 April 2002

Has anyone compared these? I have done the OL modification with great results. Expressimo is claiming their product is an upgrade from the OL. The benefits of OL counterweight were substantial for my RB900 so this statments grabs my interest.

Freedback is appreciated.

John,

I may be wrong but I doubt that you will find anyone here that has had OL modifiy their RB900 though there are one or two that have gone the Expressimo route. Try search for more info.

Alternatively, you may wish to try searching The Vinyl Asylum where they have gone so far as to discuss the relative sonic merits of removing the plastic label from the Expressimo.

I have got an Expressimo Heavy Weight on my RB900, and I definitely prefer it to the stock Rega weight.

The Expressimo Heavy Weight is both cleaner and weightier sounding than the heavier of the Rega weights (my cartridge is pretty heavy, so necessitates the larger Rega weight). On certain rock or dance material the Expressimo weight initially sounds a little less exciting, though this is IMHO due to the Rega weight having a slight “zingy” quality that is to my ears wrong. Playing a decent jazz album quickly sets this straight, the Expressimo allows the cartridge to get noticeably more out of the groove.

For me the Expressimo weight makes the P9 sound less obviously like a P9, i.e. it removes some of the leanness and opens out the mid and top end, but it does not impact the fabulous musicality of the deck. The areas where the P9 truly excels at such as pitch & timing are left intact, it just sounds nicer whilst it does it.

To answer the initial question - I have absolutely no idea how the Expressimo weight compares to the Origin Live one!

Tony, your comments about the impressimo are similar to my experience with OL. I guess they are acheiving the same thing but maybe to different degrees. I did the internal rewire as well and combined with the counterweight the sound is very similar but more open, better tonal color (contrast), less surface noise, better decay on the notes and slightly more lush sound.

I have been writing with the Expressimo company but they are very pomotional. They took some shots at the OL rewire which are inconsistent with my experience. They claim also that many OL people have switched with significant improvements. Can't find one yet, so I will look further before I consider buying.

Thanks again

I looked over the expressimo site and the claim you can use the exprissimo heavyweight with the OL mod. If Expressimo offer a moneyback guarantee you can just try it and see.
