creativity and age

For popular/rock/rap?/etc can anyone think of great works from midlle aged or old artists?
My theory is, with many exceptions I'm sure, that generally the most creative work is done by the young, eg Dylan, Led Zep, Van Morrison, Springsteen, etc. And that they usually get more bland or repetitve as they get older.
I am not so convinced with classical - to think that Elliot Carter's string quartet oevre started when he was in his 40s belies my point, but is he the exception or the rule?

Maybe you listened to the wrong recordings Roll Eyes.

I gave the Jochum and the Barenboim recordings of the Bruckner Symphonies three or four years, never developed any empathy for this music, and so walked away from it.

Never like doing that, but there is no accounting for taste.

I have to say that generally (certainly in rock music) growing older doesn't result in superior recordings ..

....The Stones are a classic case in point ...their live shows for years now have been basically a greatest hits show with 1/2 new songs slipped into the set as a embarassed sop to whatever new album they've just released.

...My cherised Steely Dan are a less obvious example but truth be told "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go" (much as I really like them) are their weakest 2 studio albums. ....Although as a live act they've become enlivened - much because they didn't tour at all really during their peak.

Paul McCartney comes to mind as well as Dylan and Springsteen as artists who may well still cut it live but haven't released a truly great piece of recorded work for years.

I just know that on this forum someone will remind me of a band or artist who has managed to maintain the quality of their output ..but as far as mainstream "mega" acts go I can't think of any right now (?)

Mark

I must agree.

If you counted the number outstanding songs recorded by artists such as McCartney, Lennon, Dylan, Springsteen, Young, Sting, Plant, Page etc.
Nobody would come close to the number of outstanding songs recorded by Todd Rundgdren

....Todd Rungren has recorded more outstanding songs than ... McCartney, Lennon, Dylan, Springsteen, Young, Eek jeez! ...ok I'm not in any sense an expert on Todd (I have some of his albums) but he surely isn't in the same league as the artists mentioned and I don't think The Runt himself would disagree!

Sorry Jet - he is in their league in my opinion, and is a better technical musician by a wide margin than any of those four (all of whom I like a LOT.)

I remember something called like 'a wizard a true star'? from the 1970s. I enjoyed that then. It seemed zany and original. What is his newer stuff like?

DenisA, I don't know the music well of the people you suggest other than Neil Young and I haven't managed to maintain my enthusiasm for his later stuff. Last night I was listening to the Decade compilation and enjoyed it imensely.

Afterlife

Sweet

God Said

Stephen

The three tracks above are from Liars (2004). IMO definitely the best album he’s released in last 25 years. Not a bad track on it.

“Second Wind” and “Nearly Human” are very good.
“No World Order” is average.

His latest, Arena is not very good. Most tracks parody other artists.

Thanks Fatcat. I enjoyed listening to those tracks
