In the wake of Honda's withdrawl.

It seems like some commonsense is prevailing.
The important point for me being that the standard engine won't be compulsory. Hey... a field full of Cosworths and a couple of Ferrari engines? Rings a bell!

Mosley and Common Sense don't belong in the same universe!

I'm not convinced this is the right way forward. How are manufacturers supposed to show their technical prowess in mechanical design when they're being told they have to use the XT transmission and their engines can't have greater performance than the standard engine? The mind boggles...

I'd guess that for the next 3 to 5 years this is pretty much the only option if F1 is to survive. Remember, F1 was pretty healthy in the days of the DFV and its off-spring.

Non "issue" engines will be restricted, unless of course they are Ferrari ones.
I seem to remember some good racing in the Formula Super Ford days.
Bad side the Ferrari in Spain super quick on the long straight pigshit awful on the corners held every at bay for who knows how many laps.

Lotus and Brabham used to manage it - until their stuff got banned. Then Renault got the turbos in...

Dear All,
I thought F1 was the premier forum for motor sport. Seems it will go the way of horse racing with the drivers being passengers and there being handicapping by weight or other means to ensure parity of performance.
In the past we had 6 wheelers new engine technologies grenade practice engines vacuum assisted aerodynamics , moving bodywork to aid aerodynamics .
Today we have a very safe racing format but it has become HOHUM so i no longer watch even though i have watched for oh so many years.
In the old days the manufacturer built the chassis and employed drivers and bought an engine.
Today it is the engine manufacturer who commissions a chassis within which to put their engine and then they employ startrek tchnology so that the driver (jockey) can steer the car.
So what to do.
Well if Bernie has any money left after his divorce it will be up to him to make the racing entertaining again.
Oh i wish for
LOTUS
Williams
Brabham
Tyrrell etc etc
especially LOTUS boy did they come up with some great ideas. The constant ride height chassis. Tyrrell came up with the 6 wheeled chassis. BMW came up with the grenade engine.
Also the drivers were Characters aND GENTLEMEN.
James Hunt pulling over to save a drivers life from a burning car is the essence of a true sportsman.
And he also bozzed fagged and shagged like a trooper.
Here in Aus we have V8 racing, not bad but not a patch on the old 1970s production saloon car racing or even the 1980's.
I want to be entertained and thrilled and have empathy for a team/driver so that i can shout and cheer etc etc.
regards David

The turbo was already allowed, it was just that nobody except Renault thought they could make it work. It took a lot of time and money to get there, then other teams stole the lead!
David,
I think Lotus, Williams, Brabham and Tyrrell used the DFV family at some time. Lots of teams used 'off the shelf' chassis too.
The point of what Max is suggesting is that it might be the only way F1 can survive the next few years. I really don't want to see 4 F1 teams and then a few GP2 cars to make up a decent sized grid...
Tony
PS. How do you tell the Ford and Holden V8 Supercars apart?

One has a blue oval and the other one doesn't.

Dave Richards may be in the market for Honda apparently.

If Dave Richards buys the Honda team maybe JV can come out of "retirement" and be their #1 driver..

A little too late for Jules unfortunately..
