Buy a Used Flatcap to upgrade CD5/Nait 5- OR get a new one?

Posted by: glevethan on 03 February 2004

Hi
Upgraditis has set in after only 1 week. I just had my system installed last week: my original ProAc SuperTablettes vintage 1987 and a new CD5 and Nait 5(and a Stageline and a P3).

I have the opportunity to buy a used Flatcap2 at a nice price. It is two years old. I am debating whether or not to jump on it. How does the age affect the performance? Should I just hold off and get a new one?

Finally from my understanding the Flatcap2 will power both the CD5 and the Nait. A HiCap will only power one component-right?

Thanks
Gregg

Yep. If the price is good go for it.

The black snaic (which you will want) is expensive.
Keep that in mind if the flatcap includes the old grey one.

Was the grey snaic with the original flatcap? The one I am considering is the Flatcap2.

It is my understanding that the Flatcap2 requires TWO cables to connect to the Nait5 and ONE cable to connect to the CD5. Is this correct? What are the going prices (US dollars) for a used Flatcap2?

2 years old is most likely a gray.
you need 2 X 5-pin snaics
and 1 X 4-pin power cable
if you get a gray use it on the nait
and buy a black one (snaic 5) for your cd5

You should be able to get used FC2 in USA for about $600. Check audiogon.com

Sorry AV in BC:
Flatcap2's have always been shipped with black SNAIC.
And if you have one grey SNAIC5, use it on the CD5, it feeds only power.

Seriously - how much DOES the Snaic affect the sound if it's JUST on a CD5?

I'm awaiting delivery of a Flatcap 1/grey, and am going to use it on my CD5. Seriously don't think the black snaic would make that much difference on power...

...I've been wrong before though Smile

Hi
I have noticed recently forum members reporting that naim equipment should be serviced if it is over 7 years old or at seven year intervals.
Where has this came from ?.
As I understand, the guidelines from Naim are servicing at 10 years and ten year intervals.
