Gabriela Montero playing / improvising classical pieces

Posted by: sjust on 15 April 2006

This is what I'm talking about:

Have bought it today, and am interested to gather some thoughts, here.

Since Brubeck, Loussier and alike, improvisation and the crossover to Jazz is nothing new, and Montero surely is able to bring this to the next level.

Torn between "hey, great approach" and "let's dump this at ebay...", I'm puzzled.

Any opinions ?

cheers

Sorry.
Forgot to reply to myself - a topic with zero replies doesn't get much attention, normally. Not even mine...

I have a couple of Montero's recordings (I especially like an all-Chopin disc on Palexa) and she's a fine pianist. Her classical improvisations don't do much for me. But I come from a jazz background, so these types of improvised meanderings by classical pianists don't do much for me. Now, to see how it is really done, check out Chick Corea Piano Improvisations, Volume 1, on ECM, or Keith Jarrett's Koln concert....
