Good Salesmanship or What?!!
Posted by: cunningplan on 10 September 2003
A good friend of mine recently took in his Hi-Cap for repair, and a re-cap also his 62/140 for servicing. He was given a price for the above but was promptly told that his pre-power combo might have problems powering his speakers (KEF Reference Ones.) I found that an extremely strange thing to say as they didn't seem to have any problems before. Anyway he found himself listening to the 200/202 combo and CDX which he decided to buy along with his repaired Hi-Cap. Apart from the fact I'm envious he's now got a better system than me, can anybody shed light on the fact he was told that he needed a better pre power combo just to make sure he could drive his speakers!

Clive

If you're weak enough you deserve what's coming to you!
If you were smart enough in the first place then maybe it was a case of money well spent.
I dunno about those Kefs but Allæs need at least a 250...

Steve.

Or the SBL is even a better choice behind the 202/200.

Either the salesman actually said that, or he heard what he wanted to hear. I can talk myself into spending money all the time, and usually like to justify it somehow by blaming someone else

Good salemanship... HiFiFoFum (Canada)
Wednesday... I went to my favourite HiFiFoFum and spent 4 hours playing with Naim Reference series swapping Neat/Royd speakers to my liking. Having good coffee (Steve has good coffee) and pleasant conversations with people... Classical, Jazz, Blue (music). At 6 PM we all went for dinner... good food! and got a lift home (by Steve) How much better can it get (at HiFiFoFum)? Thank you Steve.
