Gillian Welch-Soul Journey

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 16 June 2003

Tried this on the strength of a recomendation by my local shop. I quite like the style and her very natural voice but find the clomping backdrop a bit dull. I'd try another album by her if they have a rather lighter or more interesting instrumental support. Anyone tried others from her output they can compare with this new one?

Don't judge Gillian Welch on the strength of this album! 'soul Journey' is a bit of a departure from her first three albums.

Try 'Time (The Revelator)'
IMO it's a far superior offering and makes for a much more rewarding album. Play the first track and you'll know if Gillian Welch is for you!... the interplay between Welch and her long time collaborator David Rawlings (on guitar) is an exquisite and involving listen. Smile

I bought Revival as a try out and like it very much. First impression wasnt so great but she has grown on me. She has since replaced Allison Krause and Union Station "Live" on my cdp.

Don't forget "Hell amoung the yearlings", and if you like Gillian Welsh, have a listen to Stacy Earl (Steve's sister).

Got this one yesterday and played it this morning while getting ready for work. It's bloody marvellous ! Softer and sweeter, more mellow and less hillbilly than her previous albums (which for me is a good thing but may disappoint the purists).

Can't wait to get home for another listen. Smile

If you are enjoying this try Kate and Anna McGarrigle-'Matapedia'. Sweet (Canadian) folk of the highest quality. I still find Soul Journey a bit leaden footed in places.
