UnitiServe PS etc

I notice the UnitiServe is powered by an external power supply. Is it powered by a garden variety wall wart?
If so I guess it could be a good thing. It could mean that its power supply can upgraded by future PS products?
Strangely I have not heard much talk about the product from new owners. Could someone share their experience on this product? In terms of UI and sound quality?

*lol* - dont forget adding a powerline too
Seriously though, there may be benefits to getting rid of the switching brick but whether the costs ivolved would outweigh the benefits...

Some companies promote this strategy, as do some end users. There is a long thread over on Computer Audiophile about linear power supplies to replace the switch mode one supplied with the (original) MacMini for example.
Is it worth it. Depends on your home power supply I guess. One big reason to get rid of the SMPS is that it will inject noise back into your power supply which may affect other components. On the other hand, inside a MacMini (and probably the UnitiServe) are various voltage reducers which will still affect the power getting to the "computer" even if a Linear PSU is used externally.

I have a spare Mac Mini power cable for this - i just need to borrow a PSU from work for a weekend to try it out. I'm rather sceptical but its worth a go.

The supplied AC mains lead contains an inductor to filter off some of the deleterious effects of the switching power supply.

So far I like the GUI and the itouch app (N-Serve). To me, the music sounds more open but also at the same time a little more harsh. I truly haven't listened to it enough and have done very little a-b comparisons. I do plan on more listening sessions this weekend. I've also posted some GUI screenshots on my flickr account.

There's similar discussions regarding powersupplies and mains cables on the Audiocircle forum as well.

Thanks Develyn,
I look forward to hearing more about your impressions of the UnitiServe once it has settled in and you have had more time to listen.

the block psu will be designed/selected to give the neccesary currrent at a fixed voltage. what is all the rubbish and this obsession with added a psu.. the unit will work as naim required
