Tuners and bass (Or should i say no bass!)
Posted by: mathew farley on 25 April 2003
I'm sure a lot of people have the same problem as me, play a cd (Bass!), switch on tuner (Where's the bass gone?)...Can anyone recommend a tuner that produces more bass than my denon 260L? (Nad?,Arcam?)...I Don't want to spend too much, so would pefere to go second hand.

Mathew,
I have an old Technics tuner. It cost me £99.95 over 15 years ago and I have never been disappointed with it. There's plenty of bass and a wonderful clarity to it.

Hate to mention it.. but unless you have a decent multi-element FM-antenna you are squandering 80% of what your existing tuner is capable of. Would you hook up the latest 42 inch plasma screen TV to a pair of 'rabbit ears' antenna? A decent $300 tuner plugged into a $300 antenna is probably eons ahead a $1000 tuner fed of the 'wet string' antenna that drapes behind the system stand.

The Denon you mention is only a budget tuner and even with a good aerial it's shortcomings will be revealed by Naim amps. It is thin sounding compared to a Good tuner.
I use an old Audiolab 8000T with an 72/hicap/140 in my second system and lack of bass is definitely not a problem.
My other tuner is a Naim Tuner and that doesn't have bass problem either.
A good aerial is a prerequisite for good radio reception.

I like the NAD 402, it's better than my TU260L II by a long chalk.

glenn, I think it depends on what radio station your tuned in to, some stations use compression because it sounds better on bad car radios and portable radios ect, but not so good on decent hi-fi

I very nearly bought a cambridge audio T500 today (£79 from richer sounds) rrp £180, but the nad 402 or 412 is still on my mind. Has anyone got any better suggestions?

FM radio broadcast has a limited frequency response. I can't remember the exact figure but it is something like 50Hz-12kHz.
So even with the best tuner, radio broadcast can't go as low as a CD (and as high too BTW).

I spent some time with the Acram T61? and the Rega Radio a year or so back. The Radio was quite a bit better than the Arcam IMHO.
The NAT03 that turned up however completely and utterly "wasted" (sorry that's a technical term
) them. Search out an 03 my friend.
