Tag McClaren
Posted by: MichaelC on 29 July 2003
I have just heard on the grapevine that Tag McClaren have announced that they will cease the development of all new products. They are conducting a "strategic" review with a view to deciding where to go/what to do.
Apparently this has been posted by one of the hifi press hacks on one of the hifi magazines web-sites - I do not know which.
Regards
Mike

Their website has a letter from Udo Zucker. See http://www.tagmclaren.com. It's on the front page and it's sloooow to load, probably because of the number of hits it's taking.
The wording of the letter is a nice way of saying they're pulling out of the market due to the bad times in the last couple of years. It's sad because TAGMcLaren Audio offer a high quality alternative to music and one of the best surround sound solutions in the world - a major player in that respect.
I do know there have been layoffs at TAG. It's probably curtains and this saddens me.
Regards,
Frank.
All opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of any organisations I work for, except where this is stated explicitly.

Frank,
Shurely Shome Mishtake, or perhaps not
.....
OK, we'll give you the benefit of the doubt, you were simply overcome by grief.

I said an alternative - I didn't say you or I had to like it.

willip - I found your link in the end - turns out it's www.highfidelityreview.com.
There's much more on their discussion group though. What it seems to boil down to is that TAG McLaren Audio weren't selling enough gear to sustain their R&D effort, so something had to give. Meanwhile, the rest of the TAG McLaren Group is still doing OK (so Coulthard won't be moving from Monaco to Cardboard Box City just yet...
.
Right now they're still selling new gear, will release the next couple of new upgrades. They've also promised to maintain their warranty, repair service & helpdesk. Anything else is subject to a review to be held over the next 4 weeks or so.
Sad if they have to close really - from the comments on their newsgroup they seem to have offered a similar level of service and generated much the same brand loyalty / customer satisfaction etc. as Naim, & in only a few years too.

Well, well! And I who thought that Tag McLaren would succeed on their brand name alone. HiFi (particulary expensive HiFi) is bought by boys, irrespective of age, and many boys are into cars and quite some of these boys are interested in racing and would kill to own something with the name "McLaren" on it!
But I was wrong.
At least, this means that we don't have to worry about a full range of citchen appliances with the brand "Williams" on them
BTW. For you who still want something with McLaren on it, just go to the hotell 'Salsburger Hof' in Badgastein, Austria. There you can by a bottle of McLarens own wine!
