Mozilla...Problems accessing the forums

Posted by: Robert Derwae on 01 February 2004

Hi all:

I've recently started using Mozilla's Firebird Web browser in order to avoid those nasty popup ads, and it works well, except when I try to access the Naim forums. Sometimes the browser hangs, sometimes it gets in after a LONG wait and sometimes (rarely) it gets in fairly quickly. Are any of you Firebird users having the same problem? Any ideas how I can fix this issue?

I am using Mozilla 1.4.1 with a recent stable nightly build - so far no problems with the forum -

do you have a data speed indicator that shows if the data is arriving at the PC and then you have to wait or are you having to wait for the data from the network.

Derek:

I'm using the latest version of Firebird as a stand-alone (version 0.7). I don't have a data speed indicator, so I don't know if the log jam is on the Naim server, on the network, or with my browser. What's is a "stable nightly build?"

I tried Firebird recently. It lasted only two days because I had too many problems, and (being a non expert) was not inclined to try figuring out whether they were set-up problems or bugs. I don't recall having any problems with this forum, though.

I'll try it again in six months or so, since I prefer its user interface to Explorer's.

Actually, I'll probably have to use it again very soon because last year Explorer refused to co-operate with the site where I will need to renew my domain names. [I'm sure it would if I changed various settings but installing another browser is far less tiresome].

I've been using Firebird for a whle now and have no problems with the forum. The only things I have to use IE for is my online banking software -- everything else works fine.

If you have problems try switching the "advanced" interface off -- it uses lots of DHTML and the like so might not be standards friendly.

STable Nightly Build - the Mozilla site not only has the major release available but the builds from the latest set of bug fixes - these tend to be done on a daily basis and from what I gather there are different levels of quality in the builds - the stable one has the least number of known bugs in it or is the most stable ie less likely to crash.

I to am using FB (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007 Firebird/0.7) and can see no prolems when using this or any other forum. After purging things via the Tool | Options | Privacy | Clearall option things do indeed slowdown as all the Naim bits and bobs are loaded into cache, this happens only on the first visit to the forum and I reckon this is due to download speed or bandwidth considerations and not some problem with the browser. Sometimes things grind almost to a stop due to problems with the connection and this shows as something like "problem resolving name" appears but this only lasts for a few seconds and is cured hitting the reload or refresh button.

All in all I am well pleased with FB and use it as my browser having removed IE from my start menu.

I just started using firebird (0.7) a few days ago. So far no serious problems and I've had no problems accessing this site.

The only problem I did have was after installing the java VM (from sun.com) it still didn't work. I read the plugin facts and I had to run a registry file (not if you installed using an installation program as opposed to a winzip file). In your Bookmarks->Bookamrks Toolbar folder there should be a link to Plug-in-FAQ which has some info on installing plugins. It doesn't really sound like you have this problem though.

Robert

I spoke too soon - starting yesterday the Forum web pages would be painted to the screen very slowly and jerkily and watching the incoming data arriving I could see that the data was in the PC and the page was being painted long after the data had arrived.

I then went to EDIT - Preferences - Advanced

and then cleared the cache and the page now gets written at a fast speed - ie back to the speed I know and love

It may be that your cache was getting too full and also that it may be set too high

I first started noticing the problem on the Naim photo album thread and then the slow down spread to all threads.

This of course could be a coincidental cause and effect.

Give it a go

Robert, I agree with Derek that a good purge seems to make things go faster - if you are using your history file to hold cherishd images and other intresting things then prehaps saving to a file (Save As) and clearing your history and cache is the way to go. You may also wish to have a go at the black arts by tweaking various settings via Tools Advanced Preferences after first looking at FB tweaks! from the Mozilla Firebird forum. By changing things like the pipeline variable you can get pages to load faster but IMO a good purging gets better results.

Thanks to all for the constructive comments. I do clear my cache regularly, but that's about it. I guess I've got to get under the hood of Firebird and learn how to tweak it for maximum performance. Incidentally, since I posted my query I'm not having any problems getting into the forums. You know how that goes, just before the repairman shows up the gadget starts working again...

Oops. Hit the send button too many times, I guess.
