Support wanted
Posted by: welshmark on 23 March 2003
Advice, feedback, comments appreciated on suitable support for my Well Tempered Turntable and Naim electronics please.
I used to own Mana and I liked what it did but once I moved into a lovely victorian house the oil rig had to go.
I'm currently using a heavily modified Quadraspire cabinet with doors that looks lovely but I feel it doesn't allow the system to
fulfill its potential.
Due to its height it's a bit wobbly which isn't great for the turntable.
Any advice from well tempered owners ? I've got a large slab of granite under it and I'm considering slate.
The stand needs to be a single tower due to space and I like the look and sound of wood.
Anybody own or heard the Isoblue stand - the review I read about it stated that it was a project in progress. Has it progressed ?
I would even be prepared to make one myself with a bit of advice and guidance.
I expect suggestions on Fraim and Hutter.
The Fraim is too expensive and it would look too hi tech in my living room.
I've only seen pictures of the Hutter but it maybe Ok however my turntable likes a high mass beneath it. Would it suit ?
Other solutions welcome
Cheers

The only WTTT I've ever heard was on a qref stand and very nice it sounded too, but I can't comment (obviously) as to whether it would sound better on something else.

Tom,
Is your Hutter a custom made version? I like the idea of having 2 Naim boxes per tier. Makes the rack much lower.
Thanks.

You mention qref which i assume is a quadraspire reference - if so they are very wobbly. A WTTT tracks well so maybe it copes well with any support but what stand will optimise it is my current search.
Thanks
Mark
Tom
Nice pictures I like the finish but couldn't quite fit the one and a half size.
Ideally then I would want a one and a quarter size so that I could put my half size boxes next to the full size ones. This would stop the rack getting too tall.
Do you know if Hutter do one ? Or is this custom made territory ?
By the way I use Shahinian Arcs anybody tried putting supports under these ?
Cheers

I have never poured scorn on Isoblue.
I have heard it and it sounds similar to Hutter but in my opinion, Hutter looks a lot classier.

I have never commented on the sound.
The appearance issue is subjective. It does look a bit DIY but it sounded ok.
Hutter sounds good but also has a good standard of finish.

Chaps
I purchased my Hutter from Phonography who were at the time, the sole agent for it.
Phonography is a well respected dealer and were also agents for Isoblue, Quadraspire and Fraim.
Their opinion was that Fraim was by far the best for Naim equipment but there is a price premium.
They suggested that Hutter and Isoblue had similar properties but Hutter did it better. Quadraspire had a different sound which may or not suit you.
Some customers (mainly younger) actually preferred the appearance of Isoblue or Hutter but they were in a minority.
Unfortunately I had ordered Hutter 3 weeks before Naim announced the Fraim and I was stuck with it because it had been specially ordered for me.
Racks are a difficult thing to buy because it is difficult to dem on an A/B basis.
I think the best attitude is buy what you want and forget what the other guy is using.
My allegedly, greatly inflated and egostistical opinion is that Fraim is the best and suits Naim, Hutter is a close second followed by Isoblue, which is followed by Ash Design.
I am not keen on either Mana or Quadraspire but they are better than nothing. Mana is good under speakers and for the LP12.

Mick

Advises all forum members to run for cover fearing another Mick, Marco confrontation on the subject of stands.
Could this be the "Mother of all disagreements"

"However, your placement of Ash Design stands ahead of Mana and QS Reference in terms of performance proves that even the best people are occasionally deduded"

Well if the mana forum is anything to go by there are are around 6 people that 'know best' eh Stallion?

Hmmmm...
Let's see now. It's Monday, we have a "stands" topic, Marco is well in the thick of the action, the whole thread has gone completely off-topic and is degenerating by the hour....
Why? anybody? Haven't we been here before? I would suggest that unless anybody has anything truly new and relevant to say then you should agree to disagree on this (obviously thorny) subject. Thank you.
Richard
p.s. The Fraim's definitely the way to go....

Not new perhaps but relevant. I dont give a monkeys what anybody uses as support, but why do people keep saying qref is 'wobbly' as if that means something? So what? the platter on the LP12 is 'wobbly' as, no doubt, is the transport on the CDS3. The only valid critisism is, as Mick says, it looks like a tea trolley. I think it looks great, is as solid as a rock where it matters, and allows the kit to perform without the lipstick-on-a-turd presentation of mana.

What interesting responses.
I feel I now know as much about some of the 'members' as I do about the variety of stands available - thank you all - I found it as informative as I found it entertaining !
I have the need to build my own rack before I shell out for a smart and attractive one from say Hutter.
I can work with wood hence my interest in the Isoblue stand. My final question on this apparently thorny issue is about MDF vs Wood.
Do companies use MDF for its sonic virtues or merely because its cheap and easier to work with ?
I would like to construct a stand soley of wood so that I could stain it to suit my room but I couldn't put veneer on MDF.
Your views appreciated

Ok so you're in a Victorian house, no need for the inside to look Victorian is there? Have u decorated yet? If not there are some wonderful contemporary roomscapes you might consider using colour, the right flooring, wall hangings for baffles etc. I've just done a make over in possibly similar Victorian circumstances and the Mana looks fantastic! My wife said it looks good for Pete's sake!! And you certainly do not want your T/T wobbling about.Sorry, thought I'd try the lateral approach, but you may have already been there.

Hi Welshman
The Isoblue apparently works very well under the WTR. Speak to Derek at New Audio Frontiers...Wonder why the top of the Isoblue fits a Well Tempered perfectly? :-)
A slab of granite works well under the TT's..Even a heavy paving slab will work well..Sounds crazy, but true..I dont think that they like the metal racks particularly.
As always, try all options you can, but for value for money and looks then the Isoblue is a bargain.
Hope this helps a little...
Cheers

I think the stand wars have lost their previous bitterness, and as (I think) Marco is suggesting, are now a harmless bit of teasing.

Apparently, slate, marble, paving or wood are the slabs of choice for the WTs. If its a Ref, why not more Fountainhead or whatever its called? Granite could be a bit iffy since it can 'ring'.
I am presently pouring concrete into a large brick structure in preparation for a WT loan, but I've heard one sound fantastic on Hutter.

Slim,
Not the one I heard. Rather the other way round actually - none of the wow and flutter. I've never heard Nick Drake sound better than on the WT and timing is key with ND.

Thanks again everyone
I used to be happy with my LP12/ARO/ARMAGEDDON placed on a MANA reference but I'm now enjoying my Well Tempered Classic V on granite on my personalised Quadraspire cabinet.
I agree with Alex S. that I should look at replacing my granite with say welshslate.
However back to DIY er ...or maybe I should pay good money and buy a ready made solution but should it be Hutter or Isoblue ?
In the meantime I'm going to obsess and research for the perfect slab of slate that will be appropriate for my humble Victorian decor !
Thanks again
All the best

I'm a Welshman living in Bristol and maybe a trip to Phonography is duly in order.
In the meantime my free months trial with AOL ends tomorrow so
bye you all for now

Is there a Hutter website?
