He's my brother.. and he don't want heavy!

Some advice please for my sib.

He had climbed the Naim path to Credo/102/180 and Meridian 506 CDP but he was not really using the system too much or enjoying the music. The family moan about the bass too. The room is very boomy in general and I think that although some aspects of the system were excellent it was generally a bit flat and rather muddy. Cables and stand were non-naim.

So he had to choose to invest or downgrade...and probably chose wisely by selling the lot!

So now for the help. Can anyone advise on suitable pair of easy to live with speakers (ie not mounted too far into the room) which are nice and fast and not too bass heavy. They will probably be fronted by a Linn Classik, or perhaps a CD5/Nait setup. Budget for the speakers could be up to £1k but probably a fair bit less will get something that does the job.

I'm a bit short on experience here, beyond some s/h SBL's!

I want to give him an idea what he may like to audition-and hopefully home dem.

Thanks

Bruce

Easy to live with, nice and fast, and not too bass heavy? You mean Kans, don't you? That turns a CD5 into a CDX too, if you are lucky.

Mekon-I take it you mean s/h 'original' Kans? I thought the recent incarnation was a bit of an aberration.

Here's a few:

EPOS m12 on EPOS stands.

Totem Dreamcatcher on Partington Dreadnought stands.

AVI Nutron III on Sonus m60(?).

Frank.

IIRC, Alan Probin in Darlington had problems with bass and downgraded from a NAP500 system and found the older Epos stand mounters to work well (?ES11/ES12s) and also though well of the new M12s

Bruce,

Boominess in my room completely cured by Kan lll's (3) on Kan 2 stands. And it's a relatively cheap option and works well with both Classik and smaller Naim

Have fun,

Cheers team, lots of useful suggestions. Sounds like a few satisfied Classic owners too. I nearly bought one for my own second system but only had a brief dem.

I'm with Mekon on the Kans. I've got Kan I's on Kan II stands, and can't really see a situation where I'd change them. Kans meet some of the requirements like: (a) they are fast, (b) they like to go flat against the wall, (c) they're not bass heavy, (d) they come in well under 1k s/h.
I've got some thoughts on the proposed system change. In my experience, the lower down the Naim range you go, the less definition you get (including/especially bass). It would be really advisable to listen to the prospective downgrade before making the decision. I'd suggest trying some Kans in the current system as a first move.
On CD players, I used to have a Meridian 207, but never really got on with it because it was all mushy (lovely looking piece of kit though).

I got ES11s/12s working really well in a room with bass problems, mainly due to the increased tuneability you get with distance from wall compared to, say, SBL's. I had them about 1ft away from the wall.

I've gone back to using SBL's now though and my current thinking is more along the lines of curing the problem. To that end I'm attempting to eliminate the bass resonance using tuned RPG Modex panel bass absorbers.

Ah! Hiya Bro.

I'll leave the Kan question to the experts.
