J*** Record Requests

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 24 November 2007

I always like to listen to this programme at 5.30 on Saturdays. The trouble is, it makes me buy more CDs!! Today I heard three great tracks from albums that are new to me - 'Thimar' by Anouar Brahen (an artist totally new to me, but I recognised John Surman's bass clarinet), 'Live at the Village Vanguard' by Jim Hall with various guests, and 'Winter Moon' by Art Pepper.

I wonder who else listens to this great programme?

Bob....It's on BBC Radio 3 (see HERE). You can also listen via the internet.

The piece they played 'Kernow' is a reference to Cornwall. John Surman comes from Plymouth. I used to play in a trad jazz group with him that he started up when we were at school, long long ago. I was useless he was already obviously going to be a musical genius.

Hi Nigel

If you liked Thimar, I'd also recommend "Le Pas du Chat Noir", which features Brahem on Oud, accompanied by piano and accordion.

Dhafer Youssef is another fine artist who fuses his middle eastern musical heritage with contemporary jazz, and he has an astonishing voice to boot. His "Electric Sufi" and "Glow" albums are both well worth hearing.

droodzila & Nigel,

I agree. "Le Pas du Chat Noir" is a must. Another excellent disc of Brahem, more world music oriented is "Astrakan Cafe" (disregard the wrong image):

I went to hear Brahem's trio play this music in a small, unamplified hall in Chicago four years ago, and I consider it as one of the most moving musical experiences of my life.

Another vote for Le Pas du Chat Noir. Not the least of which because I never imagined one could blend the temperament of the oud with that of the piano ... two different tuning systems. Yet they do, with sublime results.

All best,
Fred
