Best/Worst Year for Number 1 singles

Posted by: Shayman on 23 August 2005

Am I right in saying 1964 was the best year ever for Number 1 singles (a few stinkers but generally great. Esp 2nd half of the year) and 2001 was the worst (A couple of Shaggy cover versions being the best it had to offer)?

Lets debate and try and come to an official Naim webforum best and worst years.

I don't really know my chart history but wasn't 1967 (a great year for albums, obviously) the year that Engelbert Humperdink's "The Green Grass of Home" kept "Strawberry Fields Forever" from getting to #1 on the British popcharts?

I've deleted the ones I hate and the ones I don't know but in balance, I love the 1964 "hits".
Let's compare that to 2001..............

OK, I concede that on the whole, I hate the 1990's stuff!!!!!!!!!! I can also appreciate that S-Club 7 isn't most people's favourite, but I thought they had a nice tune! Same with Kylie, Five & Westlife!

Shayman - I would totally agree that it would be pretty difficult to list such a monumentally dire pile of crap tunes as those from 2001. No wonder Kylie's track came in at no1 with a breath of fresh air after what preceeded it.

Although not great I do feel a lift has occured in the charts a little of late (generic pop, r&b and the f....g crazy frog notwithstanding).

Very generous ouf you there. But following your example of giving credit even to songs which at least hold a catchy tune I'm still left with....

A disgraceful collection of sh!te in which there are again no redeeming features. The death of 'pop' music can't be far away with such a collection of awful cover versions, remixes and once promising acts on their way down.

Invariably those 'tipped for the top' are quite clearly 'top for the tip' on these offerings.

My god you are depressing me!! That lot scores 11 out of ten on the shitometer. Maybe a few recent half decent albums from guitar based bands has led me into a false sence of optimism with regard to the health of the pop charts.

Any soulfull and spiritually uplifting recommended ringtones out there? Roll Eyes

Don't completely agree with you on 2001 - I don't even like the songs by KM or Shaggie. In fact even 1977 looks a disappointing list and I always think of that as great year.

64-70 all look good to me - perhaps it's just my age.

Think I'll play a Nick Drake album to cheer me up.
