So many new members suddenly!!
Posted by: Rasher on 06 February 2004
Anyone else noticed? or is it just me never previously noticing that newbies stick their heads in for a while and think....Nah...load of tossers! and go away again.
Has there been a recruitment drive by Richard?
I've also noticed that the regulars are dropping off. Where has Tom been for instance?
I love to see new members though. Keeps me from my work

Rasher,
when you look at some of the intolerant and I'll put it no stronger than that,[ but we all know what has been going on] rantings that have posted, is it any wonder people keep their heads below the parapet and then just disapear into the ether.unfortunately It would seem Intolerance rules here.

When I'm working at home or not working I'm in here all the time. If the topics don't interest me, or I have nothing to add, I just lurk. This forum does come across as cliuqey to an 'outsider' - but many do, it's just one of those things. As for ranting and intollerence, well, Oldie has a point to an extent. Confrontation is often considered to be the intellectual high ground and I think we all lose sight of the fact that just about anything posted in here on any subject is opinion not fact.
There's no doubt that even allowing for subjectivity, there is a wealth of good information in here and in this respect it's a very good forum.
Hope that didn't offend anybody.
Cheers
Harry

I don't expect to be here very much for most of the rest of the year: I really want to spend the few hours each day when I'm metally on form working on my OU degree. I've had the course materials for about two months but have not been able to get myself to even look at them, thanks to depression and other intractable psychological problems.
I thought that after deciding, recently, that my best chance of a career is as some sort of vague combination of writer/composer/multimedia artist/web developer I would be able to see my maths degree purely as a hobby rather than anything important, and would therefore have fewer psychological problems about studying.
But this idea has backfired. Now that I don't intend to use my degree, it has become ridiculously important to me to get a top grade. Utterly irrational, I know...
So instead of studying I am now spending 3+ hours a day listening to self hypnosis and other CDs and trying all sorts of approaches [e.g. Centerpointe, if anyone has heard of it] to pull my stalled brain out of its dive.
Fully participating in the forum is an unnecessary distraction that uses up far more mental energy than it ought to. [I'm so mentally mangled that writing intelligible sentences - particularly on controversial topics - sometimes takes a lot effort] so, very soon, I'm going to seriously cut down on my input. I'll continue lurking and occasionally posting, though. My joke about my New Year Resolution being to post more one-liners may actually come true.

Jeremy, have you tried physical activities such as walking or running in your battle against depression?
Posted on: 06 February 2004 by Fisbey
A good pyschotherapist can sometimes help.
Posted on: 06 February 2004 by JeremyD
Markus,
Thanks for the suggestion. Walking helps but every time I stop for any length of time it becomes difficult to get back into the routine. [I got out of the routine most recently because of the side effects of the antidepressants I tried last year]. Now that the cold weather has passed I have no excuse not to walk every day.

I often feel that some of the newbie posts are ignored. I try and answer even if its just to say stick around some one will be with you shortly ,kind of message. A lot of posts could/should be sorted with a search. I know a very confused amount of info can be found. Its also a good way to join in with an apparently innocent question (Richard) but it can hit some sore spots sometimes. I have also noticed a lot of "I'm looking at gettin X,Y or Z" and the quite helpful answer is get an "A". You might aswell answer CDS3 into 552/500 is the only way to go for every upgrade question.
End of rant.
BTW I thought every body was just being ammusing/silly in answer to Richard's post. Ce La Vie.

Whilst in one of my blacker moods the other day I had a pop at Linn on the new LinnkUp forum.
I expected a right kicking, instead I got a gentle, even caring, enquiry as to why I felt like I did. I replied and got a further response along the lines of 'my experience is different, but I understand and respect your opinion'.
Very different to the reaction I suspect any Naim popper would get here, and the reaction to a similar pop on the Mana forum doesn't bear thinking about.
If anyone wants to take a look it's in the 'What new products do we want from Linn' thread on LinnkUP.

Hi Jez
For the record, I am a regular visitor to both forums, mainly as a result of my need for a new system and I wanted to do some research.
I like both Forums as I bought Linn, appreciate Naim and generally like the people that "inhabit" the Naim Forum.
The Music Room is great and my enjoyment has been enhanced by many superb recommendations.
The Hi Fi Corner keeps me informed. I may well transcend to Naim in the future. If I decide to make a big investment in my system, I won't forget Naim !
The Padded Cell is exactly that - a safe place we generally end up in to relieve the stresses of life in the modern world. A bit of fun, light relief, data capture and asshole avoidance........... sorry, that's work !!
To any newbies - we've all been one, stick around - it's a good place !!

Sounds like you need to join a clique Minky. You have checked the "I want to be in a secret clique" box in the advanced options right? You could be in mine but we are so shadowy and powerful that the other members have never posted here for reasons of security.
The other way to get around here is to invent an obscure tweak and start your own cult. Try claiming that Naim amps sound better with the volume switch removed and as long you can live with a single volume setting permenently its an astonishing upgrade for free.
Matthew
FWIW I am suprised to hear you feel unnoticed as I haven't noticed you not being noticed IYSWIM. In fact quite the opposite.

Don't worry, we aren't asking. I'm a member of Matthew's secret clique, so secret in fact that he didn't know until now. But how did you know that we refer to our organisation as 'The Mudflaps'? - the mole responsible will be identified and terminated with extreme predjudice.
