Recapping

Posted by: quincy on 24 October 2001

My buddy Svelte Dave has recapped the 110s and Hicap and the sound is very impressive but I think that the bass is a bit on the thin side.

I opened up the 110s and had a look at the replacement 10 and 46 microfarad condensers. I think that Dave has substituted a 10 for a 46 in both 110s.

Would this affect the bass?

There is a 47uF that determines the low-end rolloff, if it's this one it's highly likely to be the problem.

Andy

I checked again ... 47uF condenser not 46uF.

Many thanks

Quincy,

I haven't had any direct experience of the sonic effects of re-capping myself (yet), however, others have reported that the bass, especially, seems to get tightned up a good bit with the service.

Maybe your amps were getting a bit loose and slow down there, and are now somewhat leaner and faster, leading you to perceive it as less bass. I also recall that after a re-cap the new caps need to form/break in, just as those in new amps do.

On the other hand maybe your buddy Svelte Dave cocked it all up, and it should go off to NANA for an official service. No offence to your bud, just something to consider.

How was the hunt by the way?

Maybe your friend should consider muting the input to his 110 for a few hours round about mid day just in case.

Hey, maybe Svelte Dave picked up Quincy's caps in San Fran?

Err, the replacement factory 10 uF capacitors are blue NEC bead tantalums; the 47 uF ones are brown--and are marked as such.

Would you trust this man in a chemistry lab (or his solder joints)? The values are not arbitrary...

The only thing that Svelte Dave cocks up is the trigger of his Super 10.

Replacement factory condensers may be color-coded but I can assure you that the Mexican caps are a uniform mustard color ... both 10uF and 47uF.

Anyhow Dave has posting the new condensers via US Mail and I should have them offered up to the boards soon.

The weather in Colorado was not entirely condusive to plugging Stellar's jays but, as luck would have it, the residents of Loveland were plagued by an increase in the population of prairie dogs so Dave and I picked off the little critters one by one. The residents were mighty pleased with our efforts and we ended the day with Coors and BBQ pdog. Not a bad substitute for finger-lickin' fried chicken.

Mr Tibbs

I have watched Svelte Dave tinning the condensers on numerous occasions and am completely familiar with the tinning process from the wetting and wringing out of the sponge to the offering-up of the boards to the 110s.

Svelte insists on testing the voltages before connecting up the 110s to the system.

"Rembember Quincy to check the voltages" he told me " or you could blow the asses out of the Tucans"

But any hints or tips would be appreciated before I start offering up the condensers to the boards.

Many thanks
