Calling Hermann -- Need pics of your Briks on Mana

Posted by: NaimDropper on 09 January 2004

Hermann-
I was looking through some old posts regarding Briks and Mana and found you had posted some pics but they are no longer active.
If you or anyone else has relatively close-up pics of Briks (or other floor mounted speakers) on a Mana stand, I would appreciate seeing them.
I'm embarking on a DIY project to stiffen up and generally improve my ancient Linn stands. Mana is VERY scarce in the USA and I've never seen it set up.
I may end up chucking it all in the river and buying Mana but I've got to satisfy my curiosity first without draining my wallet.
FYI my installation is on a carpeted concrete floor. LP12/Ittok/Karma 102/NAPSC/Hi 250 NACA5 and, of course, Briks.
I designed and built the room several years ago to accommodate my system and to be a small music studio. It is located in my basement so I have concrete behind 5 of the six surfaces. The walls are 5/8" thick sheetrock (as we call it here, don't know what you folks call it) with the studs on 16" centers, all nailed and glued in place. I put special bracing inside the walls to keep it from moving around. The dimensions are 12' x 22' (Briks on the 12' wall) and I can crank it up in there without waking the kids (even though they are able to hear the low bass tones...). I have separate spurs for everything.
I've considered installing some concrete bolts in the floor and have the stand spikes sit on them to improve the coupling.
I've got some friends that are handy with a welder and I plan on cross-bracing the stands to stiffen them considerably. Then I’ll fill the tubes with lead shot and epoxy. Then get some better spikes and maybe sit a spiked rectangle of MDF between the speakers and the stands... Maybe more layers if that helped. Not so sure about glass and spikes with 100 lb. speakers! That's why I need pics.
If they're too big or you have too many to post, send them to bassman at davidyates (dot) us (NOT dot com).
Thanks!
David

Why don't you drop him a line on the Mana forum or on Barnie's new forum?

Regards,

Steve.

Barnie's new forum? Sorry, what's that?
I'll probably post on Pink Fish but I'm not active there (is that Barnie's forum?).
I didn't want to post such a question on the M*** forum, figured I'd get flamed off the planet. Maybe not, though. I really can't try it here practically.
Thanks, Steve!

Hi David,

I see your point. But I dont post close up pictures of Mana stands on a forum for purpose of DIY. John Watson is a close friend of mine and I know he wouldnt very happy about it. Guess it would be your product. How would you react?

I even wouldnt post picture of the internals of my new 552 for tweeking. Both companies spend alot of money and time to develop there products and I as customer participate. Naim didnt alow to post DIY projects about there products on there forum what I understand because it wouldnt be a Naim product anymore.

Have a look at the PFM forum you'll find alot of contributors who post about DIY.

I really understand your point, Mana seems to be expensive in US. There are used Mana briks stands from time to time on the PFM forum or Ebay. I suggest to have a look.

I dont believe it's possible to get the same result from a DIY stand that you get from Mana.
And I know what I'm talking about. Some 25 years ago I was very deep into building stands and rack systems but gave it up because it needed to much time.

Thanks, Hermann, I respect your position.
I'm not going to knock off JW's design, just want some ideas. I'm in a pinch here and really want to improve my stands. I've already begun the process of bracing them.

Naimdropper,

if this is about improving your stands and not about saving some money, Mana do have a distributor in the US, Flat Earth Audio. I'm sure a quick phone call or mail will get you sorted.
