What are your 5 finest sounding vinyl?

Posted by: jim learoyd on 11 October 2008

Cat Stevens "Tea for the Tillerman" This really has to be my best sounding Lp in my collection, in fact probably one of the best recordings ever. This is a second pressing on Island Pink Rim. The 1st pressings cost around £75!

David Crosby "If I could only remember your name". Another beautiful recording from the seventies. This is a first pressing on Atlantic Records.

Crosby, Stills & Nash "CSN" 1st Lp. A "Classic Records" 200gr. Fantastic album, should be in everyone's collection.

Marc Cohn "Marc Cohn" 1st Lp. His first album and probably his best. It's a 1st pressing and amazing sound quality.

Cat Stevens "Teaser and the Firecat" Another astonishing sounding Lp from Cat Stevens. This is again a second pressing on Island Pink Rim.

Thats a cool thread Jim...

I am right on board with the David Crosby LP. One of my top five most definitely. The new remastered CD/DVD isnt half bad either. I often use this LP as a tester when listening to new components. I am sure you have heard the stories about the recording process...very advanced for the time, what with Jerry Garcia's influence. Curious how the new 200 g classic records reissue sounds in comparison with the original?

I never really thought much of the first CSN album in terms of sound q. Truly one of my favorite musically but I have never found a really clean, vibrant sounding copy. I have it on reel to reel (David Crosby as well) and it still sounds a little thin. I am disappointed by the weakness of the lower frequencies. But for sheer musical joy, it never fails to satisfy!!

I have never given the others a proper listen with your topic in mind, so will do. Of course I have heard all the Cat Stevens and Marc Cohn, but never with an ear for the recording qualities.

I will post my other 4 choices soon...

Cat Stevens is wonderful, I remember him on the airwaves in early 70s high school in Southern California. I have both albums and recently played them.

I have also been listening to CSN, wonderful creation.

I put Joni's Blue up there,
and either Rhymin Simon or One Trick Pony.

The last 3 months Joshua Tree has really been a spiritual experience for me.

From my late father's collection

Because....

Still sublime, analogue electronica.

Both classics.

In no special order.

I'm not surprised to see some MJQ in there. I very nearly included in my five (ok, 6) MJQ's "Pyramid", an original mono pressing of which I managed to pick up dirt cheap from a local charity shop. A good clean has eliminated most of the blobs (nothing potentially needle-wrecking), and it sounds fantastic. Includes my favourite MJQ number, "Django", to begin side two. Marvellous stuff.

Any Clifford Curzon on Decca

Mahler 2 with Solti on Decca - enormous!

Milt Jackson - Memories of Thelonious Sphere Monk, original Pablo pressing. Have tried many versions, but the original pressing wins by a mile.

Simply Vinyl re-pressing of Bob Dylan's Desire and Leftfield's Leftism

I was going to put that in as well as Ramsey Lewis' Wade in the Water with rather saucy cover.

Now, let's see:

- Ben Webster - At the Renaissance. Live recording from 1960, mine is a very well mastered (by Dough Sax) 1990's issue.

- Harry Bellafonte - Returns To Carnegie HAll. Also live from 1960! I have it on a recent Clissic Records vinyl, also has an early european issue where level is far to low on one channel!

- The Three. A 1970's direct to disc recording in a rather dry studio setting with tremendous impact and slam. Good music to, with Joe Sample on piano.

- Tower of power - Direct. Also a DD recording. Fantastic dynamic range.

- Dave Brubeck - Time Out. Allready mentioned here.

That's five.

I happen to have an original 1970's copy of 'Midnight Sugar', but with hindsight, I think it's a bit overrated!
