An old Rolex
Posted by: Lontano on 05 August 2010
There is a rather good auction going on ebay at the moment. Chap selling a Rolex watch on his Dad's behalf and probably a little shocked now at how the auction is going.
"My father has asked me to auction his Rolex Submariner wrist watch he has owned this for over 25 years it has a few scratches on the face, the watch does require some attention, it keeps stopping, unfortunately we know nothing about watches, can only think it is the self winder, I'm sure with a service and cleaning from somebody that does know about these, this will be a very nice watch for someone"
Take a look. 4 days still to go. Item no 140434318093

Is it time to give George a heads-up?

IWC Schaffhausen had a particular platinum model which was selling for $550,000. In the year 2000, at the height of the bull market, the demand in Chicago alone for that toy was so high that you had to join a waiting list, put a hefty deposit and wait for over a year to get it.

£60,600 is the final price. What a nice windfall for the seller and his father.

"A nice little earner" as Del boy would say, and I guess E-Bay too.
What's the final seller premium on £60k?
An other question, would it have made much difference if the watch was in great condition?

Howard - I am sure condition would add to the price but this is an area I know not too much about - like the seller!
It seems £40.35 would be the fees based on a calculator I have tried. Final value fee is capped at £40. Paypal fee would be £2060 but I am sure cash will change hands instead.

Thanks Lontano.
That sounds right I seem to remember loosing more on PP than E-B on larger sales(not that large BTW).

Lontano, are you sure on your calculation, I just had a quick play on ebay calculator and its come out at over a grand.
I sold a cd player on ebay last year and the fee was 50 quid. and that was at 500 quid sale price.

I used an online calculator. Looking at the ebay seller fees page it does say
Final Value Fees applicable to private sellers
All categories, excluding eBay Motors vehicles , mobile phones with contracts and property
£0.01 and above
10.0% of the amount of the winning bid, up to a maximum Final Value Fee of £40.00
Now if you did buy it now, it seems to be a whole different ball game.
9.9% of the initial £49.99 (£4.95) + 5.9% of the initial £50.00 - £599.99 (£32.45) + 1.9% of the remaining balance of the final selling price.
This guy started the auction at £0.99, which seems to be a cheap way to do it luckily for him.
I have always found ebay fees very confusing but I will look at them more closely next time I sell.
fees...I maybe wrong here but i did see someone on another forum calc it at £40 as well.
