Naim Virgin
Posted by: JonW on 15 December 2003
Hi people,
Im looking to upgrade my system piece by piece (currently running a budget sony CD / Denon Amp / Mission set up).
I recently auditioned the Nait 5, CD5 and Pro Ac speakers and was blown away, Naim is the sound I have been looking for all this time! Much better than Quad, Musical Fidelity, Arcam, Cyrus etc etc….
I am looking to upgrade my amp first and im wondering……
With a budget of £1000, would i be better to go for a brand new Nait 5i, or would I get more for my money if I went for some older Naim kit, for example the NAP180 with a suitable pre-amp?
Thanks.
Ps as I am a Naim Virgin please be gentle….

Get thee to Robert Ritchie a few miles down from you in Montrose. Ask him these questions, he is far better placed than most to answer them, and to boot the most capable dealer I've ever come across.
Tell him John from Burntisland says hi!
John
PS. He has some s/h things in right now in your price bracket, plus all the current Naim stuff (AFAIK) so you can make your own mind up.

Thanks John,
I spoke to Robert last week actually, seems like he knows his stuff.
Thought his opinion might have been a little bias towards new stuff as i didnt realise that he stocked second hand kit.
Cheers ill give him a call back.

Hi Jon,
I think he'd obviously love to sell you a 552/500/CDS3 but in fairness he's not like other dealers in that he'll only sell you what you need or want - he won't try to oversell a component you don't need or can't afford. That's not to say he wouldn't turn away your business but he will at least sit you down and point out the things that differentiate the various models in the lineup - from inexpensive up to as high as you like.
My trip to RR was kinda pivotal for me - prior to that I'd been convinced that Naim didn't do it for my ears, but actually hearing a properly setup Naim system playing through decent speakers for the first time (all previous dems had left me underwhelmed or even actively unimpressed) made all the difference.
He does sell s/h kit when it comes in - at the moment I believe he has a couple of 72s and an older, recapped 250 which might all fit into your budget (just) - but he may have other suggestions.
Give him a call again tomorrow, but go and see him - that's the crucial bit.
Now if only my local Naim dealers were even half as good, but I won't go into that

John

And a used 72/hicap/250, even if it busts your initial budget, is a killer system.
Enjor your search.

Hi Jon; you need to be aware that the 'old' kit sounds different to the new stuff.
A good dealer should be able to explain and demonstrate this. It's simply a matter of personal taste.
Enjoy the journey.

Ha ha,
Your right Oldie probably more to do with the hard cash!
However, I dont mind spending the money if i can hear the value in it (within reason).
Thanks for the advice guys, im off to audition a 72/140 on friday so we will see how it compares to the Nait 5.

Hi JonW,
I think you'll end up with the 72/140
