Grown Man
Posted by: rock100 on 23 September 2010
Tonight, while listening to an Ella Fitzgerald album, I was overcome. The music was so beautiful and I felt such joy listening that I began to tear up. Luckily my wife was not home to witness it.
Is it okay for a grown man to cry over music or have I forfeited the right to watch NFL football on Sundays?

Why do we persevere with this "I began to tear up. Luckily my wife was not home to witness it" attitude? Do you not let people see you laugh?
Men don't cry, it's bollox, if the emotion is there sure they do. It's not just some music that sets me off either.

Jeff it's fine.
After all, it's not as if you're worried about real football

I know what you mean when we lost at Stockport a few years ago, I just couldn't help myself.quote:Men don't cry, it's bollox, if the emotion is there sure they do. It's not just some music that sets me off either.

Hi Steve
I'm not as old fashioned as I might appear....
I have three grandsons who are soccer playing fanatics. I have seen more live soccer games the past few years than I saw/played football in my lifetime.
Maybe one of them will help us finally beat Ghana in 2022

Oh go ahead and let the inner softie out, your wife will appreciate it all the more.
I didn't have any ella except a sampler from Virgin store I hadn't paid attention to 4.5 years ago. A love interest wasn't in town Sunday and being depressed I put it on. WOW, EVERY word she sang was true, I got up at the end and went to Verve's site and ordered 3 of her Songbooks and been collecting Ella ever since. She's just incredible.

One movie that gets me every time is Little Women. When Jo goes off to be a writer and adventurous I'm all for her, then at the end her friend almost walks away in the rain and she'd miss the love of her life. I always get tears.

I've always wondered why a lot of those late 1950's/early 1960's recordings sound so good.
The Songbook albums you mentioned are a good example.
I have a 50 year old Charles Mingus LP that sounds like it was recorded yesterday.
Was it just talented engineers or was it the tube-based recording equipment used back then?

I wouldn't worry Jeff, didn't Ben Rothlisburger dry at the Superbowl? Plenty of other players too.
I don't think people from the UK can talk about 'real football' after the 'chavisty' that was the English team in this years world cup, at least NFL players play the game and don't just use it as an excuse to pick up page three girls and girl band singers.
