How many CDs do YOU buy??
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 June 2007
I've just read an article in today's Guardian reporting a survey that puts the UK at the top of the world's CD buying league - with a magnificent 2.7 CDs per head per year. Of course, per head includes children and others who may not buy any at all, but 2.7 does seem awfully low. I have cut back lately but still must buy over 75 a year - it used to be 150 or so. Judging by posts here, others must buy loads more.....

probably 8-10 a month for me and then birthdays and Christmas double that. So probably 100 plus per year.
Now i know Ewenmon buys a serious amount and he's probably upped the average to what it is!!!

Christ....I've bought about 120 in the last 2 months! Although that is unusually high for me. Probably about 10 a month usually.
Although since using this forum it has steadily increased!!

It fluctuates really. I have way to many still in cellophane at the moment!
One year was as as low as 48, average would be 120.
I don't think we are going to get a representative sample here though!

Probably about 10 a month - sometimes more.
Do 20 album sets like Rubble count as 1?

About half a dozen a month, but I also let a few go when I find they never make the playlist.

2.7 a year! I manage that in a week (sometimes more). The real answer is too many (though in recent weeks the backlog has been shrinking, which is a welcome change).
Actually, I've managed to get rid of a few CDs recently too.

6-8 a month i would say.

At least two a week, so I would guess at roughly 120 per year.

Same here two or three a week.

Tangential Addendum:
Buying so many CDs creates a storage headache. However, the recent realistation that two stacked bricks are about 1cm taller than a CD jewel case has solved the problem. By alternating stacked bricks with painted MDF shelves in a suitable alcove, I've created space for my CD collection to virtually double -should keep me going for 5 years or so.
The best thing is that it required no drilling, fiddling around with spirit levels, and so forth - even an utter DIY numpty like me could do it!

Over Time:
Between 1971 and 1981 I accumulated about 120 LPs, from 1981 till 1992, I bought one week, though not all of them stayed. Between the first releases of CDs and now I have about 1000, but this is probably aboiut half of those bought. Considering the ones still with me - over twenty years this comes to about one a week, but the rate has fallen right off, as I have most of what I want now. I sold all my LPs in 1993.

About two or three a year before joining you naimee's, since then about 2 or three a week!
Same goes for live gigs, pre-naim once in two years, now once a month.
A healthy side effect methinks

Varies month by month. Sometimes it's 2, sometimes it's 10 or more.
Overall I'd say about 50 per year.
I wonder what the number is for DVD.

Anywhere between 40- 60 a month and then about every 6 months have a clearout of usually about 50 - 60 discs.
In the last couple 3 months I have spent a crazy amount of readies. I could have bought a new Supercap with the proceeds.
I buy it if I like it.

Munch.
Always think that's the problem munch. You buy racks just to give your cd's a little room and they are not so tightly packed and from then on it is almost like an obssession that you have to fill them up.

This goes up and down but avg. is about 10/month. Unfortunatly there always are a few disappointments...

I didn't bother for a long while, but started buying them again about 3 years ago, in which time I have probably bought about 200. Strangely enough, the upsurge in buying coincided with me buying my first Naim system. A connection perhaps?

I suppose I average about one a month these days - but then I go for quality rather than quantity.

At its worst it was never more than 1 a week but in recent years I have had a rethink as I was finding that no amount of silver discs and no amount of hi-fi were providing satisfaction. Scaled it all back and now rarely exceed one a month but, as a point of principal, I play that one CD to death for at least a month in the manner I would have done when I was 18. Much more satisfying all told.

1-2 a week but I never buy for the sake of it, any more and I end up never having the time to listen properly to them...
