How many CDs do YOU buy??

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 June 2007

I've just read an article in today's Guardian reporting a survey that puts the UK at the top of the world's CD buying league - with a magnificent 2.7 CDs per head per year. Of course, per head includes children and others who may not buy any at all, but 2.7 does seem awfully low. I have cut back lately but still must buy over 75 a year - it used to be 150 or so. Judging by posts here, others must buy loads more.....

I am VERY slow at taking to new music and I have found that buying several cd's / lp's in a short period of time just makes my small collection look more impressive whilst I personally gain very little from it. Much better for me to buy one at a time and make a point of listening to it several times - unless of course it's really bad and the bin beckons!!

I go for long periods not buying music then get 20 at one go, usually when there's a sale on at Virgin or wherever.

I was in HK visiting my wifes family and went into Tower Records when they were in Princes Square only to find they had a sale on. It was like mana from heaven. I was like a bairn eating sweets picking up discs by the handful. At one point I commandeered the stores trolley so I could load them into it with my wife pushing it- well thats what women are for aren't they?

Don't know how much many was in there but seemed like 100 + +. Then common sense prevailed and I put most back. How could I take them all back to the UK in my baggage? If I remember right I don't think there was a disc over £3 in price.

If I had known then what I know now as most were Japanese discs and have now become valuable. I would have sent them back by post/courier.

An average of 2.7 CDs doesn't sound like much to me.

I know that statistics can be misleading, but even if you discount children, older generations (a compact what? hoodoo I tell you!) and people who generally don't like music, 2.7 a year still doesn't sound right.

As with quite a few other posters, I average around 2 a week (not counting vinyl). That figure used to be a lot higher, but since you can audition most albums online, I'm quite frugal these days (averaging around 200 albums a year).

I probably buy 2 or 3 a week.

I find it disturbing that the average is 2.7 a year; can people really be that indifferent to music?

Think how many people never buy any sort of music, compared to those who love music, and buy a reasoable amount as he sees it. Perhaps the non-music lover might consider the music lover's low level purchasing of high powered cars, expensive holidays, or beer [etc] to be odd! I suspect music appreciation is very much a minority interest in reality!

Even I buy more than the average in spite of fairly well having my favourite repertoire covered!

I buy about 75 cd's a year, but thats suplimented by about 125 slabs of cool vinyl. Though I went through a lean period in the 90's and I am trying to catch up on all the great stuff I missed (Auteche, Aphex Twin, Two Lone Swordsmen, Depeche Mode, etc) coupled with my new found love of Jazz (from Classic 40's and 50's through to modern Avant Garde and Improvised Jazz). As someone said their is so much great stuff out there.

Heres a thought keep buying physical media guys or we might all end up streaming innocuous muzak through our multiroom systems or even worse Enrique Iglesias/Lemar aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhh!! Eek

Peter I bought that Wilco album and rather good it is to.

Probably about 2 a week.

Had almost died-off until I got my first Naim system.

Nothing better than getting home after a day at work to find a great new CD waiting for you on the doormat.

Cheers
