Nikon D3X - Anybody else disappointed?
Posted by: winkyincanada on 02 January 2009
I have to say I'm quite disappointed by the Nikon's new D3X. The pixels are up to 24MP+, but the ISO speeds and FPS rates are down. Everything else is pretty much as per the D3. I can't see how they justify charging double the price. The only thing it would be better for is big images of static, or slow moving subjects. There are better options out there for that.
I guess I'm going to save my money....

If anyone wants a free print at A2 or 20"x16" (preferred, cos its roll fed and I have lots of it) from the 4880, then let me know. OK, its about 2 quid for A2 inc paper.

I couldn't extend that to about x30 20x16" could I ?!! - I have an exhibition to print up for a friend here and have matt k in mine from a previous job and don't want to change..!

Mind you, I say that as a lifelong Leica M user who wouldn't go near a dig body if I was paid, which is probably why my editorial work dried up..!
Oh, the M8 is quite lovely in its own way. I have m8 + 2 x m6 (0.85x and 0.72x) and a nice selection of lenses:
TriElmar Wide
TriElmar narrow
21mm F2.8
24mm F2.8
28mm F2
35mm f1.4
50mm Nocti
75mm F1.4
90mm F2.0
If you cant get it to work with that lot, then you need to try a little harder :-)

Ha ! Thought I'd be pushing my luck...!
Yeah, a friend has just dived in for the M8.2, he should be back here soon so I'm looking forward to having a good look at it...It couldn't be any worse than the mkI, a really disappointing camera I thought. It seems Leica have listened to some of the feedback, so we'll see....Still bugs me it's 12mp, but least it looks like Kodachrome
I'm jealous of your 50 Noct though !

My nocti is super rare -- been "dotted" at the factory. :-) (as have all my lenses -- dotted, serviced, checked -- not bad for 85 pounds per lens including all the courier costs too)
Posted on: 13 January 2009 by SC
Hmmm, nice ! And a good deal ! The only dots my Summicrons and Summilux's have are fungus courtesy of S.E Asia...!!

Thanks for the generous offer Jon. What's the best way to send you 120 files and can you have all the A2 prints back to me for Friday?
Cheers Jon.
Cheers Jon.

Jon - Have you got some stocks profiled for your Epson, or are you just using the standard profiles ?
If not, next time I head UK way, I can bring my Xrite and do a few papers for you if you fancy ? Cost - a CD of my choice on your fab set-up !

the d3x is aimed at a different user to the d3
d3: low light/pap/sports
d3x: studio/landscape
the d3 did those things v well but i imagine the d3x does them better
i have a d3 with 24-70 2.8 70-200 2.8 vr and a crap load of primes! it takes, in combination with those lenses, for the things i use it for, much better photos than the d3x does (i do a lot of low light no flash stuff: weddings, music acts in pubs etc)
i also have a leica m6, voigtlander r2a and a epson rd1 wich i take places i would never take my nikon gear, sometimes its just not practical.
but this is all my own experience and opinion
with the other comments about blogs forums reviews etc........
......i am a naim hifi owner and i high end nikon user
i used to work in a shop that sells cameras and hifi
they sell the best of nikon gear and the most basic of sony/yamaha hifi
i upsell nikon over other brands of camera
i used to sell people sony and yam hifi and chose not to tell them about the possibly better alternatives! im not proud but it was my job
my point: beware of the biased, make your own mind up and buy whats best for you! really why do anything else
we all ask questions and get answers on forums, be they hifi or photography they are much the same! after all one is about helping us apriciate art going in our brains and the other about helpings us make art come out of our brains!
the answers that aren't pure fact are always speculation and should never be taken as anything else
hense my recent comments in the post about the man ken rockwell
its a bit like history really where would we be if everyone started beliving those nuts that deny the holocaust, but on the other side of the coin though where would we be without them?

I have full XRite EyeOne calibration system, thanks :-) I am currently using the Epson profiles for the paper, but when I get time I will do my own calibration set
You are welcome to at least 2 cds, no worries :-)

Jon - Ok, good stuff. I'd be interested to hear how you find the results actually - for me there's definitely a much more hue accurate workflow (although I don't do much colour printing), though I have noticed a blocking up of shadow detail - this was with basic matte papers. I read this can be an issue, and Xrite recommend using patch charts of more than 900+ swatches - but this exceeds what the EyeOne software can generate profiles from, so you have to move up to the PM5 software ! I have the iO auto scanning table, so reading the printed swatch charts is very quick - but it's just the extra £££'s for the PM5....Never stops !
Posted on: 16 January 2009 by jon h
I have the scanning table too -- invaluable.
I am doing some analysis work in excel (and mathematica) on the text data files it generates. Fascinating stuff.

My word! I'll leave the analysis of the 0's and 1's to you ! I just want WYSIWYG...I spend far too much time on the Macs as it is ! The generated profiles are locked though yeah, so even if you know what you doing and how to make some tweaks to the data, you can't, unless you have profile editing software ?

I have profile editing software :-)

Love my Leica film bodies ...
III, IIIc, IIIfRD, M3-DS, MDa, M5, 2x M6 and an R8.
Wish I had a bunch of spare cash for an M8 or S20 LOL
