Music to show off your system.

Posted by: Naimed-In-NY on 18 August 2003

My apologies in advance if this topic already has been covered.

Had a few opportunities recently to show off my system to guests. None of them had ever heard of Naim, and all of them probably would choke if they knew what I paid for my system (it is a relatively modest system by Naim standards). That's OK by me, as I bought my system for my own enjoyment and because it maximizes MY enjoyment of music in the home. However, when I do have a chance to play a few tunes for guests, I can't help but want to show off the system a little. I recently noticed that I rarely play my favorite music for guests, but, rather, tend to pick selections that sound the best on my system (all of which I like, but are not necessarily among my favorites to listen to alone). I can't be the only forum member whose favorite albums are not necessarily the best recorded or best music to show off your system (or am I?).

It got me thinking - do forum members tend to play the same music to the uninitiated and, if so, what tracks and why? For instance, my favorite artist is Bruce Springsteen. I've loved his music for over two decades and I see him live whenever I get a chance (20 times and counting). However, Bruce's LPs and CDs never have been known for great sound quality, and I tend to play different music when demonstrating my system to others. My usual demonstration recordings:

Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon (predictable, I know)

Tutti, a Reference Recordings sampler of classical music that I think sounds superb

Track 3 (Battle) from the soundtrack to Gladiator - this track alone is worth the price of the CD; incredible dynamics

Cecilia from Simon & Garfunkel's remastered Bridge of Troubled Water - it just sounds great

Walking in Memphis - Mark Cohn; to me, excellent vocals

I just bought the Beatles' Yellow Submarine CD for my neices for Christmas and tried it out and they must have remastered them all because they all popped out and wonderfully muical with lots of detail. That can show off your system and have fun doing it.

I'm usually at a loss when someone wants me to prove it to them (I'm not sure the clarity is always immediately recognisable but with time it is) but one sure way is to let them bring over some of their own music and play it, they will be able to compare what they know with new detail. That's what I did when I bought my system from the dealer and ended up paying way past my budget for a budget system. Ha! Naim strikes again.

Thomas Tallis - Spem In Alium

I often wonder if it sounded as good to a listener of the 1580's seated in one of the great European cathedrials as it does to me now.

Hi
Anytime I play the cd single "constant craving" by KD Lang when anyone asks to hear the hifi I usually get a large WOW.

Sorry to inflict my current faves on you all.

They are:

Eric Clapton - Reptile (this recording is superb, life like and sounds great on any Naim system).

Status Quo - Riffs (recording only ok but does sound great on a high end Naim system. If this one does not get your toe tapping I suggest tiddly winks may be a better passtime).

Regards

To show off your Naim system you really should play music that sounds like crap on other systems.

I bought 'Totally Wired' by the Fall last week, on triple vinyl (€35, but well worth it). That would do very nicely IMHO.

Any system is able to play smooth, slow music. It takes a Naim to be able to play really loud & fast & gritty music in a convincing manner.

Have fun!

Er, anyone into Björk? I just upgraded from nait3/rega ela mk2 to 72/140/Totem Arros and the Vespertine studio version revealed its layers and Frosti, a simple melody performed by just a musical box sounds so absolutely clear as the winter air on new years eve (clear sky, slight breeze, -24 celsius) I wet my... eyes.

Stings Stolen Car is pretty nice for low end punch and resolution...

The song "Polk sallad Annie" with Tony Joe White. I consider this the best sounding pop/rock/country (or what ever) recording ever made, if I'm forced to pick just one. Made by Tom Dowd at Muscle Shoals.

Who wants to frighten the guests away?

"The Lark Ascending" Ralph Vaughan Willams.
Kennedy (violin) EMI '97

Not into classical? Clannad with wine or Irish whiskey. To soothe the troubled brow and warm their cockles after the journey.

All these albums sound good. They are all on CD as I do not have a record player !.

Mary Black - No Frontiers
Mary Black - Babes In The Wood
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Eric Clapton - Unplugged
Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
Nitin Sawhney - Human
Nitin Sawhney - Beyond Skin (Stupid amounts of bass)!

I have many other albums I could mention but above sound so much better on my main system over my bedroom system.
