Well played England!
Posted on: 07 October 2007 by Right Wing
well played? . . . they won despite not scoring a try.
It was a bloody boring game I know that.
Watch the rugby league final next sat, then you'l understand where I'm coming from.

Yeah right, stop the game just because someone gets tackled. No proper scrums, no lineouts. Great.
What we saw yesterday was a game and a half. Fantastic. In fact, the French put the icing on a fantastic day!
Thanks also to Mr. O'Neill you are the toast of England's rugby clubs, as your outburst may well have helped drive on this awesome display by England's forwards. Sheridan was blistering.
Australia and New Zealand set the very highest standards in sport, both as teams and as nations. They will come again, they always do. It's because they are such great sporting nations that it's never a disgrace to lose to them, and always a real achievement to beat them.
I don't get the "hate" bit at all.

Steve,
Here are some interesting points I would like to put to you.
1) The first Rugby League World Cup was held in France in 1954. The prime motivators behind the idea of holding rugby league world cup were the French, who were short of money following the seizing of their assets by the rugby union in World War II.
2) The first Rugby Union World Cup was hosted by both New Zealand and Australia in 1987. Right Wing Says - Union took 33 years to nick the idea from RL. However, it only took RL 24 years to nick the idea from Football and we're meant to be the thick Northerners.
3) As every union fan/player knows the scrums are what really seperates the two sports. However,In the 48 games of the Ra Ra World Cup 2003 there was 1253 scrums ・ about 26 per game. With injury time that was a scrum about every 5 minutes. Only Ten of those scrums were won against the feed - less than 0.1% - 173 penalties & 53 free-kicks resulted from these scrums - about one in five. More than 300 scrums were reset ・ almost 25%.
Two serious injuries (spine & neck) were incurred during these scrums. Several games ended with totally uncontested scrums. Right Wings Says - I am yet to see any "proper" scrums.
4) Wilkinson, England's 2003 World Cup final match-winner, twisted an ankle in training on Tuesday and misses Saturday's clash against the USA in Lens. Right Wing says - Johnny Who ?
5) Recent results;
Sat 26 May South Africa 58 - 10 England 1 try 2 kicks
Sat 2 Jun South Africa 55 - 22 England 1 try 6 kicks
Sat 4 Aug England 62 - 5 Wales (calm down it was an experimental Wesh side)
Sat 11 Aug England 15 - 21 France 0 tries 5 kicks
Sat 18 Aug France 22 - 9 England 0 tries 3 kicks.
Right Wing says I can hardly wait for the final stages what will surely be a try fest.
Regards

Absolutely.
Right Wing,
It's not a southern/northern thing. Union is simply the better game with far more to it, IMO. I'm pleased for you that you like League but to me, the lack of interesting scrums and set-plays is tedious.
Which is why I'm happy if GB do well, but wouldn't watch it.

Far more people watch Union.

Stop your moaning on which code is better, and enjoy the sport!
Personally I prefer Union (OK, not much option growing up in small-town NZ), but League is also a great game to watch.
Both codes are enjoyable, and both could teach the other some good aspects of their game.

My point is that I dont understand how people can say that Englands last game was "a game and a half" when they didnt even score any tries. Do people not enjoy watching jaw dropping tries anymore?

Steve, it depends what better means for each of us.
I know that for me better doesnt mean; hardly any tries and the ball being in play for less than 30 minutes in a typical game. Dont get me wrong, Union can be a great game to watch, but this is just not often enough IMO, club level is very poor, this is even reflected in the attendances.
Can you expand a little on the lack on interesting scrums? If you read my stats, most would conclude that the point of the union scrum is somewhat a miss.

I couldn't illustrate it any better than Saturday's game. To me, England's front five determined the outcome of an international match.
For those interested in all aspects of the game, it doesn't get much more exciting than that.
The game is not just about hits and trys (exciting as that may be at times). It's about possesion, turn-overs, drives and battles. It's about small contests within a great contest.
That's where we differ. Andrew Sheridan's performance was as awesome as any try by Dan Carter.
As a man of Sale, you should proud of him not whinging about try scoring in a totally different type of contest.
Just as in Hi Fi, I don't care about stats. There are often facinating team games where the stats mean nothing.
