Our children's choice in music
Posted by: MichaelC on 14 October 2006
My eight year old daughter continues to surprise me.
Having been brought up on a diet of Hawkwind and Steely Dan both of which she is quite partial to. She found Eels a couple of years back and in particular likes the track Friendly Ghost.
This morning she was exploring the radio channels on Sky and was listening to The The - Wasteland declaring it to be brilliant.
I can't fault her choice in music.

My son(23) seems to have been slightly "programmed" by my music over his early years as he recognises prog and rock elements and influences in his music. He has seen more bands in the last 5 years than Sally(wife) and I have in 25.
My youngest daughter(22) has finally gone to a couple of festivals with her brother and is expanding her musical horizons from boy band "girlie music".
My eldest daughter is a lost cause . She likes Robbie W and Ronan.
As someone once wrote, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Don't worry BigH you've done what you can for them. Even I, lost in trash of the 60s and early metal stuff like Steppenwolf and Led Zep have now reformed and getting into all things Blues, R&B, Big Band Swing, classical etc. It only took me 20-30 years. There's still time.

My nine year old's favourites are Warren Zevon and Kraftwerk - unlikely bedfellows I know. I am trying to get the 11 year old into the Clash, but he just doesn't go for it. I have an awful feeling he might be getting into 'Rock' - urgh.

My eldest has been through Metallica, Anastacia, Pink, Elvis and is currently into Foo Fighters (massively) and Emmylou Harris (plays Wrecking Ball practically every day). She's 8. She liked Marylin Manson but when she saw the covers it scared her shitless and she had nightmares.
My little guy (4) just likes Elvis.

My twelve year old daughter likes the Black Eyed Peas and my seven year old son likes Santana! They both like Johnny Cash, although mostly they're not interested in any of my music apart from a bit of PF in the car.

Led Zeppelin is TRASH?! Say WHA?!
Hey, I like all kinds of music, too, including "Blues, R&B, Big Band Swing, classical, etc." and including Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Beatles, and other presumed "trash of the 60s."
And what's that all about? "Trash of the 60s"?! "Reformed"?! Why the need to slag some kinds of music at the expense of others?
And anyway, aren't there only two kinds of music ... good and bad? At least my seven year old daughter thinks so ... she likes Joni Mitchell, Schubert, Beatles, Keith Jarrett, Ravel, Aretha Franklin, and Led Zeppelin.

Reminds me that my daughter also asked me to play Zep's Dancing Days off HOTH endlessly for a while. That was great too.

I'm still lost there - just deciding what Steppenwolf album to play, probably At Your Birthday Party.

My 22 years old daughter is real big on Dmitri Shostakovich and Stan Getz.
I keep asking her: If you already like Shostakovich at 22, whom are you going to like at 82?
Probably it will be Peter and the Wolf.

Steady on with patting yourselves on the back, you're all kidding yourselves ! When the hormones kick in, the truth comes out, the mission statement of every teenager is to find some aural entertaiment that his/her parents detest, that makes them want to leave home. That's the deal, and long may it be so. The trouble with Babyboomers is that they are far too liberal, so hard to shock, it has to be tough being a teenager these days.

hehe I thought the trash comment would get some guys stirred up. LOL. It's great for teenage hormones, but I never have to hear Layla or Stairway to Heaven again in my life. I do love things like Magic Carpet Ride and Born to be Wild, but only twice a year on the radio. I did love some of the exotic stuff the Zep did but I'm looking seriously into the older standards of Ella fitzgerald, Nat Cole, Ray Charles for my kicks now.
Zep II was just too much with "the juice running down my leg" I remember at christmas my sister turning and saying "That's gross" of course I loved it all the more.....didn't know what they were talking about..... Lemon song... huh?
I do have 2 of Hendrix tho i haven't played them in quite a while. Love sides 1 and 4 of Electric Ladyland.
Beatles I think were exceptional for their range of work. Instraments and writing. Seems now that I have Naim kit the last song of Side 1 Abbey road plays sweeter than ever as a good blues song. Maybe it's me getting older. Knock em out John and Paul.

My very little ones love 'Wipeout' particularly the start where there is hysterical laughing and and a high pitched fade saying - wipeout. They also love Johnny Cash's 'Walk the Line' tho i get wrong for singing along with 'chickaboom, chickaboom'
Kids adore 'monster coming over the hill' by the Automatic. Listen here
