Overview
Remember the English Progressive Rock scene of the alte 60s and early 70s? Ambitious, exciting and heady! Come and sample groups such as Curved Air, King Crimson, Genesis and Yes, In a feast of flamboyount sounds.

Description
"Turn on tune in, drop out" That was the anthem of the mid 1960s Flower Power generation. In these ten sessions we will be exploring some of the most potent progressive rock music written in this country during that period. Groups such as Curved Air, Caravan, Gong, Yes and Genesis will be featured. Each session will devote to one group. IF you remember it the first time around come back for a nostalgia encore. If you don’t, come anyway and experience some original and thrilling music. Some musical analysis will be undertaken.

Course aims

Course aims:
The aim of this ten week course is to introduce listeners to a wide ranging representative of cross section of progressive rock music and to explore how this reflected the age in which it was written.

Course Objectives:
1. to sample a wide range of British music which was created at a seminal period of pop/youth culture?
2. To view this music as both a mirror and microcosm of the society which created it?
3. To realise that this music was not only different, but also that its value was fundamentally personal, inner and non-commercial.

Wow what an address.

Is Interstellar Over Drive just off Arnold Lane? I used to go there to see Emily play.

Actually, it is not far from Strawberry Fields where I hung out with Penny Lane & Eleanor Rigby eight days a week.

Week 1: Caravan
Week 2: Curved Air
Week 3: Henry Cow
Week 4: Gong
Week 5: Hatfield and the North
Week 6: The Incredible String Band
Week 7: Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Week 8: King Crimson
Week 9: Yes
Week 10: Genesis

Never thought of ISB as prog-rock (quite wonderful. but not exactly a rock band - OK maybe on Hard Rope, but ...): shows how much I know - probably could only make the first 9 weeks given the dates.

ROTF,

I'm sure you could make valuable contributions for the first nine weeks Big Grin
I wonder what examples they will play for each band? Any suggestions?

It would be good if the lecturer delivered the subject in the style of Paul Whitehouse

A music curriculum (i.e. 1000 Years of Popular Music) in this format could transform the education system in this country. I would end every lesson with a piece of music, like...

Maths - Hendrix; if six was nine or Kate; Pi Smile

I'd love to be there to hear the inevitable arguing between rival bearded knitted jumper proggers about the relative importantce of their favourite band over the other(s)!

If I ranked then in order I liked them and I may change tomorrow then

01: The Incredible String Band
02: Emerson Lake and Palmer
03: Caravan
04: Hatfield and the North
05: Gong
06: King Crimson
07: Curved Air
08: Henry Cow
09: Yes
10: Genesis

Though I could listen to any of the first 8 ad infinitum. I'd replace the last two with Colosseum and Barclay James Harvest.

I haven't got a beard, but Mrs R did knit my jumper Smile

Isn't Lets Be Avenue where Delia Smith lives in Norwich?
