Help with old kit

Posted by: Misguided Fool on 11 November 2003

Hello there,

I may be being a bit think here, but I am having a problem (or not a problem) with my system.

I have a 110, 42 and SNAPS.

A piccie of the schematic is at the following link:

http://www.elvis-says.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/hi-fi/naim.gif

I had assumed that the SNAPS was powering the 42. However, whilst cleaning last night I accidentally knocked the lead out of the back of the SNAPS. The music stayed on. On investigation it seems that the 42 is getting its power from the 110.

Am I doing something wrong?

I would appreciate any help or advice that can be given.

Many Regards

You should be connecting the snaps us like this
Socket 1 to the amp
Socket 2 to the preamp

i think the power amp should be connected to the power supply, the signal from the preamp should pass through the power supply then to the power amp as most naim components are connected i'm not sure though.

Mark,

No, your right, the 42 is taking power from the 110. To power the 42 from the Snaps you need to do the following:

Connect a 4 (or 5 depending on how old the Snaps is) pin Snaic lead between the 42 and the Snaps (it tells you which connections on the back of the Snaps and 42 how to do this IIRC)

You then connect the output (on any one of the four remaining sockets, they are all the same)of the Snaps to the 110. Sounds crazy but the signal from the pre-amp travels through the Snaps to the 110.

Not too sure if the supply in the 110 is better or worse than the Snaps, but if you have a Snaps (with a 110) then I would imagine that your Snaps is later model with dual 24V rails which would be significantly better.

Bob just beat me to this, his socket numbering sounds right too.

Hope this is clear

Thanks for that everyone. Will try it out when I get home from work.

Hi chaps,

Thanks very much for all your help. That worked a treat. To say that there has been an improvement in sound quality would be a bit of an understatement. It sounds like different equipment altogether! Smile

I tried a before and after test to just see what difference there would be. I didn't expect there to be much of a difference. But let's just say that after putting the SNAPS in place I was grinning from ear to ear.

Thanks again
