The wife and i will be going to Canada (somewhere around Niagra Falls)in June '08, will we be able to visit anywhere where we will be able to ski at that time of year, within easy driving?
And i would like to go Salmon fishing as well, has anyone got any experience of these two pastimes in Canada?

AL4N,

Canada is a big place, 2nd only to Russia in area.

Calgary to Kelowna is about 6 hours drive (non-stop). Kelowna to Vancouver is about 5 hours. Kelowna to Nelson is about 6 hours. Prince Rupert to Mt Robson takes a day. Don't even THINK about speeding - the Police are nice, but firm and have radar sets inside their cars that pick you up even when they are going the opposite way and you can't see them yet!!

If you are going to see a selection of sights you will need a car (allow £250 pw) and consider motels or cheap hotels like Days Inn, Best Western. Prices vary from about $80CN per night to $140 for a room that would sleep a family of 4. Add taxes to all prices (but you can recover your accomodation taxes when you leave, if you keep the receipts). These cheap hotels are good and you can get good, inexpensive food at cafes nearby. Petrol is less than half the price in UK.

This is the most practical way of covering the large distances. It also allows you to get off the "tourist" routes when you feel like it. Lake Louise, for example, is beautiful at 06:00, with only nutcases like me around. By 09:00, there are 500 Japaneese tourists and although its still picture-perfect, its time to head up the well-maintained hiking trails towards the Plain of the Six Glaciers, away from the maddening crowd, or visit the Inkpots above Johnson Canyon where the bus-tour parties don't have time to reach before they are whisked away to the next "hot-spot".

You could spend two weeks based in Banff (or Canmore - much cheaper) and see many of the famous tourist sights (Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Icefields Parkway, Emerald Lake, Takakkawa Falls, Lake O'Hara, Assiniboine, Sunshine/Healy Pass, Radium, Calgary.

Put yourself anywhere other than Banff and your fixed base, whilst full of beautiful scenery, could limit your ability to see some of the more iconic sights.

Cheers

If you are spending time in Niagara and longing for a solmon fishing experience, you are in luck. There is great salmon fishing in Lake Ontario. Fishing charters can be booked out of Burlington or Oakville cities that are 30-40 minutes away from Niagara along the QEW highway heading towards Toronto. One site found that might offer some information is

Hope this helps.
