CD not playable by computers...
Posted by: Scaramuccia on 12 February 2010
Hey out there!
I am just ripping a couple of my CDs to iTunes on my MacBook for streaming. Now I came to Heather Nova's 'South', and both my MacBook and iMac do not accept it. The drives endlessly try to read it, without success, and only pressing the eject button for minutes (!) releases the disc again. The CD cover says: 'This CD is not playable on computers'.
Any idea how I can put the bits into iTunes?
Cheers

Try ripping with something else?

You mean some other ripping software? I don't even get that far. My Mac completely hangs and repeatedly tries to read that disc and does nothing but giving some scaring sounds. I think it's rather a problem of the drive and the CD itself, not of iTunes. Must be some really weird copy protection. And I doubt, that it works with a PC, but I will check tomorrow with a friend's machine...

Its copy protection and nothing to do with iTunes.
I do not know a way to get round it, where I have ran into this I have used Bit Torrent.

The Hollies Greatest hits does this - copying it to a CD-R using a CD recorder (Yamaha CD1300-HD) removed the problem.

I would be almost certain an HDX would rip it...

It took some time, but I managed to try this 'CD' (or how you would like to call it) on 5 different (!) Windows machines. Guess what: they all hung up completely after trying to read the CD. Only restart helped.
In fact, the record company didn't lie when they said that 'This CD is not playable on computers'...
