does anyone actually read my FAQ?...
Posted on: 17 November 2007 by john R1
AV@naim, i did read the faq the other day, and have just read it again, the only thing i have noticed when i set up the speakers up again i could not hear anything from my sub on the speaker test, although it is working, could it be a setting i have selected on the n-vi, also have read the manual regarding the bass/mix, should i have this on or off, am using small mk speakers all round + sub, the only other thing i noticed since the update, it used to get locked in on dts when fed a optical signal from my hd-dvd, and had to be powered up again when switching back to v+box for the tv signal to go back to pro-logic that worked ok last night, the commands from the remote are still very slow when trying to set it up, which makes it a hit and miss affair when getting it back to MR.

sub test tone:-
-were the other speakers producing test tones?
-note that you must be on disc input and have no disc in drive for test-tones to be heard
-if you are on disc input and playing a disc, the audio track levels will vary instead
-was a factory reset performed after the update (as per the update instructions)? This has to be done after any update to reset EEPROM user values

bass mix:-
see here - http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3452929996/m/1862985807

so from this, you can see that when speakers are small, some info from these speakers will be directed to Sub anyway. Turning on BM will just re-enforce this, its a matter of preference

remote commands:-
The menu navigation on the OSD has been sped up, but in certain situations exterior influence can still affect remote operation.

Have you got -

-low energy light bulbs in the room
-plasma/LCD in line of sight of n-Vi IR receiver (logo)

to test this...

-enter the front panel menu (press hold MODE on front panel for 2 sec OR press SETUP on remote for 2 sec)
-navigate the menus on the front panel with the remote navi keys, note speed of menu navigation
-now turn off LCD/PLASMA/CF bulbs and try above again... is it any quicker? if so then its interference

Note:- OSD menus will be faster when a disc is not playing. The actual action of DVD MPEG decoding is quite a processor intensive task.

Note:- most settings on the OSD are mirrored on the front panel menu also.

AV@naim, not sure if the n-vi was re-set after the update, i know i had to re-set all the values speaker distance etc, also the funnny thing was when i first set up the speakers i selected the wrong setting on the fron speakers, i put it on front ext so when i run the test tone i had sound from the centre rears and sub, yet when i corrected the front speakers i had sound from the fronts centre rears but could not hear the sub, i did not have a disc playing at time, also i have noticed a couple of times when using the remote on the toshiba HD-E1 it puts the display back on the n-vi perhaps this interfears with the remote on the n-vi ?

front external allows front audio only via din output. This would turn off the front speaker outputs on the speaker sockets.

You should be able to change the n-Vi/remote system code to another to stop the interference from the other remote. Speak to your dealer.

That fourth bit may be a problem with the PTRDBG protocol. You should add a choice in the menu to set it to 1.

As the DVD5 has no bugs, the new firmware may add new features. But not an HD-DVD upgrade, sorry Roy.

Manu, I know that it'll only ever play SD DVDs. I'm just impatient for a new release. Not too sure what new features it should introduce as DVD5 seems pretty complete to me.

Maybe it has scaler support built in :-)

Roy.
