What Speaker for a NAIM system

Posted by: JohnMak on 18 February 2003

Can forum members comment on speakers suitable to use in a Naim system which will give the bass slam of the older Linn Isobariks and SARA's.

I heard the NAIM Intro2 today and it has a nice tight bass, a reasonable price (in Australia $2,700) .... just not enough depth to to the bass for me.

I've read about the SL2 which sound "on paper" would seem to be what I'm looking for .... but wow, AUD15,000 for two sheets of veneered particle board, 4 relatively inexpensive drivers and a crossover. Whew!
OK, I oversimplify ... a little. But, whatever, that is an ENORMOUS mark-up.

I know some NAIM users are running less expensive speakers and would love to hear any recommendations.

Many thanks guys,

John,

I use a pair of Ruark Equinox's. These replaced a pair of Linn Sara 9's.

I find they work extremely well with my Naim gear and they produce plenty of Bass slam. Much more than the Linn Sara's.

I havn't heard the SL2's yet so I cannot offer a comparrison but they are more keenly priced,

Hope this helps,

Regards

James, what are 'these'? similar to Epos ES22's
but not, unless it's a weird angle.

If they are es22's how do you plug up? jumpers?

Steve

I love the combination of Naim and Dynaudio speakers. I currently own the Contour 1.3se and I am considering purchasing the Audience 82.

I am wondering what people think of the Naim and B&W combination. I did some searches and got a lot of positive reviews, but if anyone can add anything, it would be appreciated Smile

stealing thunder...

Steve,

"These" are a diy project. Ya see, James likes to tinker with wood and exotic materials including little shiney bits of wire. This is a little something he threw together just to annoy the rest of us.

... version 2, I believe ...

jealous I am

Hi Rockingdoc,
Yes I saw the SBL offer yesterday and have sent an email enquiring wether they can be shipped to Vietnam and now waiting for a reply.

Cheers,

Dynaudios: Work well with Naim BUT need loads of power to get going. I wouldn't attempt it with my Nait 5. What amps are you using?

B&W: Recently did a home dem of CDM7's. They did some things well, but left us feeling detached from the music. We were observers - the performance was not in the room. Very odd feeling. Attack sounds also seemed rounded off at the peaks. We were happy to return them although they do some things very well. As above, I was running them on the end of a Nait 5. But I didn't get the feeling that we would have been happy with them regardless of Naim amp given that we play the system most at low to moderate volumes. They did better when we cranked it up Smile

I'm waiting on a pair of Meadowlark Audio Kestrel 2's after auditioning the Kestrel Hot Rods.

I have a B&W setup (Nautilus 803) with CDX/XPS/52/SUPERCAP/135's.

First, the Nautilus 803 needs a lot of power to drive them effectively. I don't know if it's the same with the other series (e.g. 600), but at the beginning I had a 180 and I was not satisfied. With the 135's I'm now OK.
Second, I had also a problem with a lack of deep bass; I found recently that it was more a problem of localisation of the equipment; I have moved the speakers in another room and have installed a soundbase under the speakers and the result is now excellent.
In the meantime, I have listened to other speakers, includind Proac, PE Leon (very good speaker too), Spendor, Dynaudio..and B&W.. If I had to do a move tomorrow, I'd go buy a pair of used Nautilus 802.
For sure the B&W sound is more a studio sound, very accurate, not explosive. It all depends of your taste. The best is to arrange with your dealer to have a pair for a "long week-end".

Currently using Kef 104.2's with CDX/72/hcap/250

i am not up to speed on the latest speaker models but i demoed dyn, and some other models at the dealer and nothing under 10K US$ sounded good to me..my buddy recommended the 104.2's and for the 1000 US$ i spent (ebay) i can not be more pleased..i listen to mostly Rock and Blues from 60's-80's and no spkr i listened to moved air like the 104.2's; my mofi cd recordings sound awesome..live jazz sounds amazing as well esp the 50's b-bop stuff...anyway, i am no where near as knowledgeable as the others on this board but i know what sound i like..just mho..mark
