Possible Upgrade

Posted by: Auditor on 04 February 2004

Hi folks,
I have been offered a supercap and wonder if you could tell me if I should seriously consider buying it. My current system is CD 3,5/Flat/72/Hi/180/Linn Nexus. I am aware that upgrading my preamp and especially speakers would be more necessary. All advice on the system is appreciated but one question is if I should drop the Flat/Hi and replace them with a supercap which should be able to power both items (right?). Would it be beneficial and to which degree? Supercap might prove valuable when eventually upgrading to a 82 later. Please accuse mistakes - English is not my native language although my name suggests

No, the Supercap can power only one unit.
If you get a superdeal, go for it and sell the Flatcap. Use the supercap on the 72 and the Hicap on the 3.5.
But you should consider a better CDP before upgrading your power supplies and preamp.

Hello again,
I still don't understand why a supercap can't power a 72 and a CD 3,5 simultaneously although I know that it isn't meant for it (and possibly might be an 'overkill' for a small system). I eventually had the idea when I studied my owners manual and saw how a 82 is connected to a supercap compared to two Hi-caps. The sockets of a supercap provide (reading clockwise) socket 1: +ve, ch1, -ve, ch2, +ve socket 2: +ve, nc, -ve, nc, +ve. So I thought it might be possible to power the preamp with socket 1 and the CD which just needs power and no music signals with socket 2. Anyhow, thanks for the answers I do think myself I should concentrate on other parts of my system - it was just the opportunity that made me consider a supercap.

I reckon the Nexus speakers are the weak link in your system.

Auditor,
You are right about the Supercap sockets. The problem is if you do what you suggest, you will create a ground loop. All supplies in the Supercap share the same ground. The CD and preamp will be grounded by 2 links: one from the signal cable, the other via the Supercap. Even if you don`t ear the buzz of a ground loop, it will sound probably worse than with the Flat and Hi you have.
