Johnny Cash American 6

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 25 February 2010

What a wonderful record this is. Everything about it is brilliant - the singing and playing, the songs, the production. As they say, 'It's like he's in the room'.

I thought American 5 was the last in the series, and then this appears. According to the sticker on the box, 6 is the last. Even if you think you don't like Johnny Cash, you should try this. In fact, all the American series are superb.

Yes, I really do like it!!

I was pleasantly surprised just how good it was considering it could potentially be the dregs. No dregs here though.

What format did you buy it in; CD or vinyl?

CD for me.

Rick Rubin was in the LA Times interviewed about this. Said Johnny planned several albums but died suddenly so he had this in the studio and didn't really want to let it go and finalize the whole friendship.

Johnny was an incredible man

Rubin and Steve Earle must be twins separated at birth doing the ZZ Top thing.

I've just ordered this, and await its arrival with impatience.

I already have American I to IV, plus the box, but didn't have American V. I decided to get that as well and was very surprised to see a statement on the amazon US website that it had had been discontinued by the manufacturer (with consequent sky high price for a new copy). I got it from a UK site for next to nothing, but I thought that others here might appreciate a little warning.

The simple reason for that is that rights to the recording have been acquired by another record company. It will become available again through the new company.

Probably the most moving music video I've seen is "Hurt" by Johnny Cash.

Well worth seeking out on YouTube.

If you like 1 to V1 I would recommend the 'unearthed' boxed set. Another 4 cds from the same sessions plus a compilation. By no means leftovers.

I agree ... makes me verklempt every time I see it.

I also think Cash's version of the song is one of those rare covers that's even better than the original.

Best,
Fred

The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I listened to it. Nobody else can sing "For the good times" now.

Yes, it's beautiful, plus John Levanthal is such a great producer. I hope she records the rest of the 100 songs on the list.

All best,
Fred

B*gger! My CD arrived from the States today, and it's a flipping digipack, which I hate.
