Dynavector P75 Phono stage
Posted by: welshmark on 11 October 2003
Hi
Views on the new P75 would be appreciated.
How does it it compare with the usual suspects ?
This phono stage seems to have appeared in Forum users systems with little fanfare or have I missed a thread ?
I have a Dynavector XX2 cartridge going into my NAC82's own phono boards and have been considering replacing them with a stageline or modded prefix - anyone compared these with the new P75 ?
Thanks in anticipation
Mark

Hi Mark
Interesting thread there. I myself also have an 82 with internal phono boards for a Dynavector DV20-XL. However, I also recently bought a Stageline S as I was going to try and see if the external Stageline is better than the internal boards. Unfortunately, I have not managed to lay my hands on a suitable power supply for the Stageline yet which has rather stopped me in my tracks - particularly as there is no way (as I understand it) to power the Stageline from the 82, unlike the newer preamps.
I would be interested to hear about your findings with phono stages other than the internal ones. Having said that, the internal phono stages do sound good.
Cheers

We have been playing with the Dynavector P75 phono stage recently. Now many of you know how highly I rate the Tom Evans stages. The new Dynavector is excellent value for money. It's relatively fast and has good resolution. In many ways it's better than the MicroGroove and it has the added goodie of being flexible. It's a remarkable piece of kit which ought to be on anyone's listening list.
Of course, it's not in the same league as the Groove. I see you have an XX2 and 82. If your record deck is in the same class (e.g LP12/ARO, Gyrodec/SME, Xerxes/Artemiz), then you really want to consider a Groove. I know it's much more money, but it would be well worth the saving up...sadly!
Regards,
Frank.

Currently using Exposure CDP with NAC112/MAP150/FlatCap2 and I'm restoring a 17 years old Thorens TD321/SME3009R with an old Audio Technica pickup, preparing to buy Stageline, replace the pickup and return to LP world. I listen classical to music from Baroque to music from Brahms, Tchaikovsky, mostly Piano, Violin, Cello Concento. Originally think of Shure V15VxMR, but someone says it is not for classical music. And MC pickup will be better for classical music. MM/MC is a consideration for the model of Stageline. Any recommendation on pickup?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Frank and Tom-
I am using the P75 with a P9 and DV17D2 mk 2. Because of the relatively high internal resistance of the 17D2, I have to use the P75 in the standard mode. There was a gentleman in Australia who must ahve had an early unit, who felt the PE mode was better in the first few weeks, after which the standard mode was better with DV cartridges.
The pricing differential is worse in the USA. Tom Evans "The Groove" is $4000 and the P75 is $595. Is The Groove THAT much better to warrant it?

Per,
It has RCA connectors. We're using Chord Anthem into a Mayware adaptor.

Hi Per-
This is the standard USA pricing. Contact Mike Pranka, the USA distributor to dicsuss the feasability of an overseas purchase.

Hi
Thank you all for your reply's.
The P75 is clearly a serious option for me.
This thread however has lost me slightly but what the hell !
When I do take the plunge I am unclear what to do with my 'phono' input on my NAC 82.
When I remove my internal boards do I forget that input ?
Do I put in 'blanking boards' (are these straight through boards?).
Presumably with straight through boards the phono input becomes a line level input ?
If so is this better than the others ( I know I would have to make up some phono to BNC leads)?
By the way can I re-label my 82 ?
eg can I move the phono label and put it onto the tuner switch as I will find it odd listening to my record player whilst the tuner switch is engaged ! Sad I know.
Many questions and thanks for your patience.
All the best
Mark

Is the P-75 really better than the Prefix?

Don't know; but a P100 was significantly better than a Linto in a Lingo'd LP12 set up and miles better with a DV amps, Well Tempered, DV cart set up.
The P75 is by all accounts a handy upgrade over the P100, especially with regard to dyynamics and top end stuff. One may need a DV cart to get the best out of it.

I'm having trouble finding info on the P75. I'm wondering if it would be a good match for my Helikon SL? How much gain does it have?

I listened to the P75 today at my local dealers he informed me that the P75 will suit any cartridge as it can be adjusted internally.I listened to it on a Dynavector pre power combo Shanian Speakers nac A5 cable, and a Well Tempered turntable.
The P75 was a big improvement over the standard DV phono stage.

I bit the bullet and replaced my 82 boards with a P75 and it was an amazing improvement.
I was expecting a difference but not to this extent.
More of everything : more detail and separation and better rhythm and timing. No downsides at all.
My well tempered and DV XX2 whilst sounding wonderful with NAIM's own boards are now being shown off to their fullest.
I heartily recommend this phono stage to anyone who takes vinyl replay seriously and a relative bargain to boot.

Some people say it is " a good phono stage for the money". To me, its just a great phono stage.
I wonder how many folks are using it in the Phono Enhancement mode (The Dr. T. mode)? How many are using it in the standard mode? There was an earlier post from someone in Australia that said the Dr. T mode sounds best for the first six weeks or so and then the standard mode sounds better.
I also find it sensitive to the shelf material it sits on.

What interconnects are you using between the WT, the P75 and the 82?
Thanks

I have a Zoethecus rack. The top shelf is their high-end constrained layer damped shelf. The second shelf is their entry level MDF shelf. The sound was generally MUCH clearer on the constrained layered shelf, but more lively on the MDF shelf. YMMV.

I haven't played around with interconnects yet.
I'm using what I had to hand :
Linn analogue (phono to phono) between the Well
Tempered and P75.
Naim Aro Arm Cable (phono to BNC) from P75 to
NAC 82 (using straight through boards).
I briefly used a DIN input with Linn analogue
(phono to DIN) and it sounded similar as via
the straight through boards.
I like the idea of using the phono input with its BNC's and pressing a button that says phono
rather than for example the tuner button appeals to my sad side !
