Used 52/Supercap questions
Posted by: Richard P on 18 November 2003
Hi
Can I expect a 12 year old 52 and PS, serviced by Naim in March this year (PS upgraded to Supercap), to be the same as the most recent version, or am I better off looking for newer models? Should I insist on a black Burndy being included as well?
Thanks for any help

There have been some major revisions of the boards, Pots and front panel since the early days. I changed from a 1996 52/SC to a 2000 model and the difference was significant for a small investment.
I guess the main board 521/3 and the pots upgrade would give you a similar sound to the >138000(1999) model but without the full Flash compatibility.
Do a search on preamps and you will get more details in an article dated 27/8/01

I wouldn't recommend buying a pre-black Burndy 52. Getting an older 52 serviced & brought up to current spec is expensive - the cost of a black Burndy alone is about £250! Far better to spend an extra couple of hundred quid on a more recent example...

I'm with Adrian on this one, unless you're getting it for a song
A factory upgrade to turn a 52PS into Supercap cost me £950 in 1997, the pots boards upgrade cost me c.£200 in 1999 and the black burndy cost me £250 in 2001. Total £1400.
All of these were very significant upgrades. The front panel upgrade is apparently not but does allow you to use flash (dont bother)

chfs911,
You mention an article dated 27/8/01. I'm struggling to find it. Can you help anymore?
I'm keen to get a second hand 52 and was wondering which vintage holds all the mods (pots, boards, etc) i.e 2000 onwards?
