How do I play files bought from the itunes store on my HDX?

Posted by: Richard Adams on 28 July 2010

My daughter has bought a couple of audiobooks from the itunes store and wishes to play them on the HDX. We have moved the files onto the NAS but they aren't showing up on the HDX.

Is this all to do with itunes only allowing authorisation on so many computers? Is there a way around this?

At present we've put the files on to her ipod and playing via the USB port. Is there a neater solution?

Cheers

The HDX will play AAC files won't it? Music (and I think audiobooks) from the iTunes Store are no longer DRM protected so should play fine. Have you tried them of a memory stick plugged into the HDX?

Just looked at the HDX on Naim website. It will play MP3s, AAC etc from things plugged into the USB port - in fact they say that quite specifically. No mention of these things playing from NAS, though.

That is true IF you upgrade everything to iTunesPlus right? I thought you had to pay a small upcharge to remove the DRM on existing purchases.

New purchases have the option.

At least that is how I understand it.

Indeed standard downloads from itunes are full up with padlocks. You have to pay for the 256 version to remove DRm.

Another way is to burn them to CD then import from that CD into itunes (seriously) this removes the DRM.

Another way is not to purchase from itunes.

No difference–will play from anywhere if not DRMed.

I don't often download from iTMS - only usually the free offerings. However it's my understanding that while for a while iTunes Plus was an option, everything I now 256kbps AAC without any DRM. This has been true for over a year if memory serves.

If no one confirms before hand, I'll check inthe morning but I'm sure iTunes purchases can be played on the PS3 and Foobar for that matter.

The music no longer has DRM.

But this was an audiobook. And they still have DRM.

You are, of course, correct...

Music has no DRM and can be played on any device which supports AAC format.

The Audiobooks in iTunes Music Store are supplied by Audible and do have DRM. You'll have to play back the Audiobooks on a computer with suitable Audible format player - iTunes or Windows Media Player or Audible manager - or on a portable device which supports the Audible format - iPod or there are players available for Palm and Windows Mobile Devices (also I think Android though can't find it currently).
