Uniti or Magic DSI vs. CD Player with integrated streamer
Posted by: ramona.c on 17 November 2009
All those one box solutions are great to build up - more ore less - "just basic" high end systems.
Lot of us people already own excellent ampflifiers, i think.
Wouldn´t it be a nice way to upgrade our systems with a new CD-Player including an integrated audio streamer instead of changing the whole system, risking to make one step forward and to steps back.
What do you think about a forthcoming Naim CD 5as (as for audio streaming)...

I don't think it is a sensible idea at all. CD players are, or soon will be, legacy technology. Building one into a streamer/pre-amp would be like building a turntable into a cd player!
But making a DAC/streamer/pre-amp is a good idea - you could use your existing cd player into the DAC, progreesively switching to the streamer as you digitised your cd collection and/or bought downloads. I suppose the Linn Majik DS-I is such a thing; abundant digital and analogue inputs and volume control, a streamer, with power amps as well. I wonder what an Akurate DS-I might be?

Thanks for your comments!
likesmusic,
I would not yet claim CD-Players as "legacy technology", including of course the Naim ones...
CD Players also benefit from new buffer and reclocking technologies and will perform
soon as good as "DS"-Players, I think.
For the CD itself, it is still the (lossless) digital source #1,
as most "DSs" and other streaming solutions are "feeded" with: CD-Ripps!
We will have a long co-existence, like we have it with turntabls.
I was talking about more alternatives for us customers.
Do you think anybody will replace his NAC 202/282 & NAP 200 or his Supernait & Highcap
with a Uniti or Linn Magic DSi?
O.k. some.
In case of a forthcoming solution like an Akurate Control DS-C, I´m with you.
But how much will it cost...

Linn have just announced that they are to cease producing cd players next year.
Legacy technology!
Still think a pre-amp with a streamer in it is the dream product. The NAIM DAC is not far off being such a thing.

Good move by Linn in my eyes!
A DAC preamp would be the dream for me

No dig out on the Uniti for the DAC upgrade has surprised me.

Yes Occean, I agree with you. And I guess by focussing on their key competencies, Linn can get a better resut than if they try and do everthing. To which end, while I was on the Linn forum today I also noticed that their Principal Electronic Designer, Ian Wilson, endorses dbPoweramp as a ripper and says he has used it himself for years. $36. As used by the guy that helped design the Linn DS. Times they are a' changin'.
(Would be nice if NAIM took a similarly public stand on such products, and either endorsed them or demonstrated why they weren't as good as the NAIM solution).

Not me, but nor would I replace my CDX2/555PS with a Uniti or any Linn DS model. Why not just add a streamer to the existing set-up if that is what you are after.quote:Do you think anybody will replace his NAC 282 & NAP 200 with a Uniti or Linn Magic DSi?
