Where to buy blank cassettes?

Posted by: Not For Me on 12 October 2003

My Nak needs feeding with a new batch of cassettes, and I can't seem to find blank TDK or Maxell C90 metal cassette tapes anywhere, either in a shop on on-line in the UK?

I used to buy TDK MA90s in John Lewis, but they don't seem to do them anymore - We are all using CD and Mini disc now it seems.

Anyone point me to a reliable mail order tape supplier or shop?

Thanks,

DS

Try
Tape City

I bought a batch of metal tapes from them a couple of years ago and they were fast and cheap.

Oh I see. You know, I use speaker cable to listen to music. If I didn't listen to music I wouldn't even need a stand.

So why don't we post we all post our stupid lazy kit queries in the Music Room, just so we can say, "hey it's all about the music"?

TomK - Tape City, no Metal C90s

Herm - Why bother to answer if you can't help?

Sorry Tape City didn't work. That's a bummer as I'm about to buy a new batch.
I agree it's surprising and disappointing that folk seem to be happy to expend more energy in sarcasm than it takes to ignore a post. Perhaps PCs should be fitted with a Breathalyser (or Wankeralyser) so silly stuff like that never gets through. Maybe the Padded Cell would have been a better place to post though.

Yeah - chill out Herm...

Go to Ebay - there's a tonne of MAXGs on there all the time - I'm tempted to get one as a "status symbol" since they're "hand made" and have about a zillion components in each cassette...

What's wrong with SA though - they're OK at a push (well, they're blooming excellent if you've only ever owned one metal tape, like me Smile I used to use SA/AR all the time and had better results than with Maxell (the Maxells I used seemed to be prone to drop out, chewing, and snapping....)

Well, I wasn't getting that worked up about the apparent misplacement of this topic; just a little surprized at the why.

It's not terribly smart either because there's shitloads of people who don't even know the Music Room exists. So if you ask a hifi question here you'll get fewer responses than in the Hifi Corner.

Which bringeth me to the point that I can get six-packs of cassette tapes anytime I want at the local dept store. There is indeed not as much variety of types as there used to be in the eighties, but they aren't gone yet. You just need to use your legs rather than the www.

Sorry mate - didn't mean to sound too arsey Smile

Yeah, you can get mid-end tapes in places like HMV still as well; personally, if pushed, TDK Ferric (the last generation of D) aren't too bad if you watch your levels.

Tape is still ultimately tape though - so no matter how much you spend it'll still degrade over time. Mind you, what won't??

The final word(?)

From pricebusters.uk.com (tape suppliers)

'Thanks for your em

Regret all manufacturers have discontinued production of metal tapes.

Once our Maxell CD60 (95p each) are sold there will be no more.

Metal C90’s sold out last year'

I am now trying www.feltech.co.uk

That's sad David. However every cloud has a silver lining and I've just realised I know of a source of a few metal tapes (TDK MA90) who's willing to let them go for a mere 20 quid a pop. Send me a personal message and I'll (sorry, my friend will) get back to you.

Cheers
TomK.

David,

I just did a Froogle search on "TDK MA90" and "Maxell C90". Both returned numerous hits. I clicked on a couple of links and they seemed to be in stock. Maybe worth a try?

What's wrong with these TDK MAXG:
£50 for 10 BIN on Ebay Smile

Ejl,
Froogle looks like a very useful site until you see it's totally US-centric, there's no way to select UK suppliers and no UK equivalent site - not a lot of use then really, if you live this side of the pond! - ah well maybe later eh!

David
Just looked in the Maplin Catalog and they list several metal (Ferric & CRO2)compact cassettes.
If you get stuck, I have a trade supplier who lists a few cassettes in his catalog - only Maxell UR or UDII types though.

Elj, I tried Froogle as well, couldn't find any UK tape suppliers.

I went round a number of local shops searching yesterday, the looks from the assistants were as blank as the tapes they didn't have.

Dom, the E-Bay ones work out > £6.00 per tape incl p&p, a bit dear for my taste.

I am waiting to hear from Studiospares about thier listing of MA90s.

I have ordered a load of Maxell CD60s as a fall back from Feltech.

The search continues.

I must get on www.naks.com discussion board about this...

O.k., but compared to 6 UKP, why not buy them at
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=MA90-3PK
for $1.16 each and have them shipped to you (they say that they ship internationally)?

Eric

ejl,

You make a valid point, I will have a go and see how much it all adds up to including the shipping to UK.

What are we all going to do in 5 years time when the cassette will cost more than the deck? Confused

Yeah - but those are MA-nothing 90s, the Ebay ones are the MAXG ones that were about a tenner each when current.

£6 is steep for a tape, but it IS an MAXG...

I'd like to get one of them, and a Sony Metal Master, just for the hell of it, to go with my weird TDK "powder case" AR limited editions....

As Eric says Computergeeks its only $3.49 for 3 MA90 but $20 P&P or $29 P&P for 6 x 3pack. Total $49.94 = $2.27 each. $2.27= £1.36 each.
12 x 3 pack also works out at £1.36 each.
A bit more reasonable.

A local HiFi shop had 2 TDK MAXG 90s, which a customer had ordered, but not collected.

They were asking £10.00 EACH!

I suggested they frame them and put them on the wall as works of art.

I'm not that desperate (yet)!

I am still waiting to hear from Studiospares.

Yes!

You are a gent sir.

If you can get any Maxell Metal CD90 or TDK MA90s at up to £2.50 each, I will have 20 of them, pay for the postage, and a beer (or two)for you!

Phil,

Thanks for the lead... but the reply from Protape:

Hi David

Many thanks for your enquiry.

The MA90's are now obsolete, and as the availability of audio
cassettes seems to be less and less I'm afraid we don't have
a 'metal' alternative.

We do have a couple of chrome audio's however:

Maxell XL2 @ .89p
Unbranded C90 @ .96p

I hope this is of some help to you and I look forward to hearing
from you.

Kind regards

Emma
