Too good to pass up.....?

Lately I've been spending far too much on CDs (no change there then), anyway, even though I'm not the hugest fan of lieder but £20 for Fischer-Dieskau's almost complete Schubert survey (of about 20 discs) - that said, I've always been told by those who heard him, after a lieder concert that hasn't really grabbed me, that if I'd been old enough to hear him in concert I would have a different view.
Anyway, while scouring the Britannia site for this, I came across the Boehm cycle of Mozart symphonies for just £10. Now, I already have one cycle (the incomparable Mackerras) and assorted other symphonies so it would seem like a no brainer, especially given the favourable writeups it has received. My problem, is that I found Boehm in Figaro a little uninspiring - should I chance it or not? Thoughts from anyone who knows the set appreciated.

ok Tam, none of the profi's seem to be answering so I'll pitch in. I have a vinyl boxed set of Boehm's Mozart Symphonies 1-24. I have not really got much to refer it to since I've only been evolving in classical music recently. However I find the set quite pleasing in an unchallenging way. Sort of what you expect when you buy Mozart with no expectations. For a tenner it seems good value but when are you going to find time to listen too it??

Dear Ian,
I too was a little surprised by the lack of response, but hey ho. In some ways it might be interesting to hear an approach which I suspect is a little more laid back the Mackerras. After all, I never really thought I'd love a Haydn symphony without Bernstein at the helm, but then along came Jochum.

This is of course a very valid point (and one I tend to disregard utterly - I remember once a few years back when I actually got the surplus down to zero......).

Tam!
Buy it! If you don't like it, I will have it at no loss to yourself, postage and all! I had both the DG boxes on LPs, and found them very sane, and even inspired at times! I would be glad to re-aquaint myself with them, so you have a no risk option! I have the last six on CD, which I thought were the best part, so if you liked these, we could do a sort of contra-account swap, or whatever...

Dear Fredrik,
I shall place the order later this evening.

Dear Fredrik,
Just listened to the first symphony - I don't think you'll be getting your hands on the set.

It's funny this is to Mackerras's Mozart what Davis was to his Beethoven - a very different approach, yet one which is also rewarding and complements in nicely.
