'Locked run-off grooves'

Posted by: Tim Williams on 15 July 2003

Being extremely bored (and hot) my mind has wandered to the topic of locked run-off grooves on some LP's (the bit at the end of a side - usually side two - where the music / sound effects continue forever until the arm is lifted off the record).

I can think of a few but does anyone know of any more?

Hawkwind - In Search of Space (wind / sea noises continue at the end of side two)

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother (dripping tap at the end of Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast)

Rush - Fly By Night (bells at the end of By Tor and the Snow Dog)

The Beatles (end of A Day in the Life - or is it Good Morning? Can't remember!)

Rainbow - Difficult To Cure (laughing at end of title track)

There must be more...!

Also, how about 'double groove' LP's etc.Such as Monty Python (Matching Tie and Handkerchief - I think) or the 12" single of Kate Bush - Sensual World

Lets make a list - Or is it just me Smile

The single sided single that came with the first few copies of 'Never Mind the Bollocks' has a blank track cut from the inside to outside. Without any sort of locked groove at the edge, it just throws the stylus off.

(How do I know? Why would anybody play a blank record?)

Side 3 of Super Furry Animals - Rings around the world also does this.

The original pressing of "The Culling Is Coming" by 23 Skidoo (1983) has a locked groove in the middle of side 1.

What about the Non 7 " single, consisting of 99 locked grooves?

Whoooah - what's this 'Muppet Show LP'? How cool is that: I have to own one. How rare are they?

nearly as rare as my ken dodd and his diddymen on the knotty ash record label. Smile

I will add Gong - Camembert Electrique. Side one, the run off track is entitled "Wet Cheese Delirium" and it is all about the joys of camembert cheese.

No doubt I will find some more locked run-off grooves to enlighten you all with...

IIRC 'Double Nickels on the Dime' by the Minutemen has a repeating track of what sound to me like a VW bug. Can someone confirm this - I may be imagining it. One of the best albums ever made.

cheers,

Oh and I forgot to mention side 2 of Gong - Camembert Electrique, a very strange noise indeed.

It always freaked me out a bit when I was little - I don't like to think of poor Fozzie trapped in the theatre for, let's face it, ever.

DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!! I can't believe someone beat me to this one!!! I remember this well in Junior House (in the blind boarding school I went to) - we had hours of fun running this at 78, 16, spinning it backwards etc - and I finally scored a copy a couple of years ago to go with Muppet Show 1 that I got when I ran into a climbing frame in the school playground (hey - I said it was a blind school he he he!!!)...

A day in the life - Sgt Pepper - The Beatles - that's the one you were thinking of...

I *swear* I own another LP with the locked groove - this is going to do my head in now...

Hey - wasn't there a 12 inch of "Pop music" (I think) that has 2 tracks on side one - each as different grooves, so you never know which one will cue up when you drop the needle?

Also, the 7 inch of "Bring your daughter to the slaughter" by Iron Maiden is etched - my totally blind mate wrote off a needle on this as he thought it was a track - d'oh!

Blur either "Blur" or 13 has one. I'd better go check which.

It's possible that the Damned single 'Smash it up' has 'Nibbled to death by an Okapi' in the locked groove. Or perhaps I'm hallucinating.

Yes it does; each of the four sides has a repeating machine noise.

Yes, it does; although this doesn't mean you're not hallucinating.

...aren't we talking about modulated run-off grooves here? Most, if not all, run-off grooves (even the silent ones) are locked to prevent the stylus from engraving the label.

Anyway, a few more examples:

  • peter gabriel II (original issue, not the "Charisma Classics" reissue), side 1
  • Eno, Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy), side 1
  • King Crimson, USA, side 2

Found another:

Hawkwind - Choose Your Masques - end of side one "if you want to get into it you've got to get out of it" ad infinitum.

Best

I don't like those 7inch singles that have the ribbed ridge just after the run-out groove - my cartridge body vibrates horribly on those...

Anyway - just WHAT is that sound at the end of Sgt Pepper - I know it's a jumble of tape, but it sounds awfully like "never to see any other"... It's supposed to say something rude backwards but I didn't hear it when I ran it backwards...

What happens on a turntable like the Numark DJ ones where you can physically tell the deck to play backwards permanently - will the needle pop out of a locked run-out groove - play the album backwards, and then let the arm fall off the outer edge of the record? Just curious...

Paul,

Not on my copy at least.

Speedy J's album Bigmod + consists of 200 locked grooves.

I have some of the series 'Cologne Cyclez' which are 133.3333 bpm locked grooves for sampling purposes. This is one type of music that works better on a CD, with looped .WAV files.
